New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held a series of meetings with senior executives of leading US companies in New York, pitching India as a destination for investment and exploring opportunities to deepen India-US trade and commercial partnerships.
The meetings brought together leaders from some of the world’s major investment, technology, insurance, financial services and consumer companies. Discussions covered opportunities in sectors including manufacturing, artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, quantum computing, insurance, financial services, beauty and personal care.
The outreach comes as India continues efforts to expand its global economic engagement and strengthen its integration with international investment and value chains. The meetings were also part of Goyal’s wider engagement with the US business community during his recent visit to the country.
Blackstone Explores Deeper India Engagement
Goyal met Jonathan Gray, President and COO of Blackstone, along with Prakash Melwani, Chairman of Blackstone’s International Private Equity business.
The discussions focused on expanding Blackstone’s investments and partnerships in India across key sectors.
Blackstone’s presence in India makes the company’s engagement significant for the country’s broader investment landscape. Discussions with a major global investment firm can help identify opportunities for additional capital, partnerships and expansion across different areas of the Indian economy.
The meeting also reflected the government’s effort to maintain direct engagement with major international investors as India seeks to attract long-term capital.

Financial Services and Wealth Management in Focus
The Minister also met George Walker, Chairman and CEO of Neuberger Berman, along with senior members of the company’s leadership team.
The discussions centred on strengthening investment linkages and expanding engagement in financial and wealth management services.
India’s expanding financial sector offers opportunities for international companies across investment management, wealth management and other financial services. Greater international participation can potentially bring additional capital, expertise and global business linkages to the sector.
For India-US economic relations, financial services remain an important area of cooperation alongside traditional trade and manufacturing.
Estée Lauder Looks at India’s Growing Consumer Market
Goyal’s meeting with Stéphane de La Faverie, President and CEO of The Estée Lauder Companies, focused on growth opportunities in India.
The discussions included increasing manufacturing and sourcing from India and the country’s growing beauty and personal care market.
India’s large consumer base and expanding demand for beauty and personal care products create opportunities for companies looking to increase local manufacturing and sourcing.
A greater manufacturing footprint can also strengthen domestic supply chains while creating opportunities for Indian businesses involved in production, sourcing and related services.
AI, Cloud and Quantum Computing Take Centre Stage
Technology emerged as another major theme during Goyal’s meeting with Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO of IBM.
The two sides discussed ways to strengthen IBM’s engagement in India and expand cooperation in artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, quantum computing and other emerging technologies.
These areas are increasingly important to India’s digital economy and technology ecosystem. Greater corporate engagement can support investment, research, technology partnerships and the development of specialised skills.
For India, attracting investment in emerging technologies also aligns with its broader effort to build capabilities in high-value and knowledge-intensive sectors.
Insurance and Financial Services Opportunities
Goyal also met Michel A. Khalaf, President and CEO of MetLife, to discuss the company’s growth opportunities in India and the expansion of the country’s insurance and financial services sector.
Insurance remains an important area for India’s financial inclusion and economic resilience. Expanding insurance coverage can help households and businesses manage financial risks while creating opportunities for investment and innovation within the sector.
The discussions also come against the backdrop of India’s broader policy goal of expanding insurance coverage and access.
General Atlantic and AIA Group Discuss India Opportunities
The Minister met William E. Ford, Chairman and CEO of General Atlantic, to discuss opportunities for deeper investment and business engagement with India.
General Atlantic is a global growth investor, making its engagement relevant to India’s efforts to attract long-term investment into expanding businesses and emerging sectors.
Goyal also met Mark Tucker, Non-Executive Chairman of AIA Group. Their discussions focused on AIA’s engagement in India and opportunities in insurance and financial services.
The talks included India’s vision of “Insurance for All by 2047”, under which wider insurance coverage is being pursued as a long-term national objective.
Multiple Sectors, One Investment Push
The New York meetings covered a wide range of India’s economic priorities. These included:
- financial and wealth management services
- manufacturing and global sourcing
- artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure
- quantum computing and emerging technologies
- insurance and financial services
- beauty and personal care
- investment and business partnerships
This sectoral spread shows that India’s engagement with US companies is no longer limited to traditional trade in goods. It increasingly includes technology, services, capital, manufacturing and knowledge-intensive industries.
Strengthening the India-US Economic Partnership
The meetings also form part of a wider India-US economic engagement. Before the New York meetings, Goyal’s US visit included participation in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee and planned interactions with American industry leaders, investors and startup representatives. The government had said the visit would focus on expanding opportunities for Indian businesses and strengthening bilateral trade and investment ties.
The latest corporate meetings therefore add a business and investment dimension to India’s wider trade diplomacy with the United States.
For India, stronger engagement with major US companies can support investment, manufacturing, technology partnerships and access to global business networks. For American companies, India’s expanding market and evolving investment environment offer opportunities across both established and emerging sectors.
A Broader Push for Investment and Growth
The New York meetings underline India’s continuing effort to position itself as a major destination for global investment.
By engaging directly with leaders of companies such as Blackstone, IBM, MetLife, AIA Group, Estée Lauder, Neuberger Berman and General Atlantic, the government is seeking to turn India’s growth prospects into deeper commercial partnerships.
The impact of such meetings will ultimately depend on follow-up investments, new manufacturing and sourcing commitments, technology collaborations and business expansion.
However, the breadth of sectors discussed reflects a wider shift in India-US economic ties—from conventional trade towards a more diversified partnership covering capital, technology, manufacturing, financial services and innovation.
