Surat (Gujarat): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on World Environment Day inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 24 Central and State government projects worth ₹18,778 crore in Surat, marking a major development boost for South Gujarat.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the projects include initiatives worth ₹16,968 crore from the Central Government and ₹1,810 crore from the State Government, covering sectors such as roads, energy, infrastructure, and industry.
The event was held at the Deendayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium in Surat in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Union ministers, and other dignitaries.
PM Calls Surat a Model of Cleanliness and Sustainable Growth
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi described Surat not just as a city but as a “spirit”, praising its transformation from an outbreak-hit city in the past to one of India’s cleanest urban centres.
He credited citizens for their strong participation in cleanliness drives and said Surat has become a national model under the Swachhata Abhiyan.
The Prime Minister emphasized making cleanliness a way of life to ensure a healthier future for India.
Focus on Green Growth and Climate-Friendly Development
PM Modi highlighted India’s progress toward “green growth”, stating that economic development and environmental protection can move together.
He noted Gujarat’s leadership in:
- India’s first Climate Change Department
- Charanka Solar Park (Asia’s major solar installation during its launch phase)
- Strong renewable energy expansion
He said India is now among the top five solar energy producers globally, with Gujarat contributing around 20% of the country’s renewable energy capacity.
Major Infrastructure Projects to Boost Connectivity and Industry
The Prime Minister said the newly launched projects will strengthen industrial capacity and promote sustainable development.
Key infrastructure highlights include:
- Road and highway expansion projects
- Energy sector development initiatives
- Industrial infrastructure upgrades
- Connectivity improvements through major expressways and rail corridors
He said improved infrastructure will enhance connectivity in tribal and rural regions and open new economic opportunities.
Surat’s Circular Water Economy and Water Security Model Praised
PM Modi praised Surat’s innovative Circular Water Economy model, where treated wastewater is reused and even sold to industries.
He also highlighted the Tapi Barrage Project, calling it a long-term solution for water management in Surat, ensuring water security for the next 50 years.
Waste-to-Wealth and Sustainable Urban Development
The Prime Minister emphasized India’s long-term focus on sustainability through:
- “Waste to Wealth” initiatives
- Circular economy models
- Clean energy expansion
- Urban sustainability planning
He said India’s development approach aligns with nature and long-term ecological balance.
Gujarat’s Contribution to India’s Renewable Energy Growth
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that Gujarat continues to lead India’s green energy transition.
He highlighted:
- Gujarat contributing 21% under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
- Large-scale solar and renewable energy expansion
- Mission LiFE participation across the state
- Target of net-zero emissions by 2030
He reaffirmed Gujarat’s commitment to the vision of “Viksit Gujarat to Viksit Bharat @2047.”
Large-Scale Water Conservation and Tree Plantation Efforts
CM Patel also detailed environmental initiatives including:
- 2.20 lakh rainwater harvesting structures under Jal Sanrakshan Abhiyan
- 2,703 Amrit Sarovars across districts
- 16.96 crore trees planted under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign 2.0
- Promotion of natural farming and Mission LiFE initiatives
He said these efforts are helping improve groundwater levels and environmental resilience.

Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi highlighted eco-friendly arrangements at the event, including:
- Plastic-free handmade posters
- Use of earthen pots
- Recycled materials for event setup
- Bicycle rally with participation from thousands of citizens
