PM Modi’s Vision for Uttarakhand: A Decade of Development & Support; NDA Provided Rs. 1,86,000 crore Financial Assistance for the State

Prime Minister Modi's leadership has transformed Uttarakhand through key infrastructure projects, disaster relief, and sustainable development initiatives
Indian Masterminds Stories

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014, Uttarakhand has seen a remarkable transformation, driven by a unique development model tailored for the Himalayan region. While the concept of a “double-engine” government may have political connotations, it has undoubtedly brought an infusion of energy, resources, and power to the state, helping it overcome long-standing challenges and achieve unprecedented growth.

Prime Minister Modi has consistently shown a deep affection for Uttarakhand, a state that has faced numerous challenges, including geographical obstacles and economic stagnation. His focus on the region has led to the launch of numerous development projects that were once stalled, providing tangible benefits to the people of Uttarakhand and overcoming the state’s natural hurdles.

A Shift Towards Sustainable Development in the Himalayan States

When Prime Minister Modi assumed office, he recognized the need for a new model of development, one that could address the unique challenges faced by Himalayan states like Uttarakhand. These challenges included economic decline and the problem of mass migration from the mountains. His vision was clear: to create a sustainable and inclusive development model for the region that would lead to economic growth and better living conditions for its people.

In his first budget, Modi allocated separate funds for the Bharatmala Project, as well as several other sustainable development initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and connecting remote regions of the country. This approach has not only accelerated development in Uttarakhand but also contributed to the national integration of border areas from Kashmir to the Northeast.

Key Infrastructure Projects Transforming Uttarakhand

Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, several major infrastructure projects have been launched or completed, transforming the state and its connectivity with the rest of India. Among the most notable projects is the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which will drastically reduce travel time between the two cities, making the journey possible in just two and a half hours. This expressway will be a game-changer for tourism, trade, and overall connectivity for Uttarakhand.

In addition, over 4,700 km of rural roads have been constructed across the state, connecting 199 villages with a population of more than 250 people to the broader transportation network. The upcoming 125 km-long Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway line, expected to be completed by 2026, will further enhance rail connectivity, boosting both tourism and economic activity in the region.

Support for Disaster Recovery and Pilgrimage Development

Prime Minister Modi’s unwavering support for Uttarakhand has been evident in times of crisis. In the wake of the 2013 Kedarnath disaster, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi had offered to assist with the rebuilding efforts, though his offer was rejected by the then-state government. However, in recent years, after disasters like the 2023 Silkyara tunnel accident and the tragedies in Dharali and Tharali, Modi has closely monitored relief efforts and provided financial assistance.

To date, the central government has allocated immediate financial aid worth Rs. 1,200 crore for disaster relief and recovery in Uttarakhand. Furthermore, projects to improve pilgrimage infrastructure are in full swing, including the construction of ropeways to Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib, which will make these sacred destinations more accessible to devotees.

Expanding Uttarakhand’s Economy Through Strategic Investments

Modi’s tenure has also seen substantial investments aimed at boosting the state’s economy. For example, the ongoing development of the Song drinking water project and the Lakhwar Vyasi hydroelectric project are expected to generate significant economic returns and create jobs. Work on the Jamrani Dam near Haldwani is also progressing, promising to address water scarcity and irrigation challenges in the region.

Additionally, with central funding of Rs. 31,000 crore allocated for roads, Rs. 40,000 crore for rail projects, and Rs. 100 crore for airport expansion, Uttarakhand is poised for significant growth in infrastructure, creating a foundation for long-term economic prosperity.

Healthcare and Emergency Services: A Focus on Well-being

In the area of healthcare, Prime Minister Modi has also prioritized Uttarakhand’s needs. The construction of an AIIMS satellite center in Kichha, Udham Singh Nagar district, is a significant step in improving healthcare facilities in the region. Moreover, the launch of the country’s first heli-ambulance service from AIIMS Rishikesh provides a quick-response emergency medical service, which is especially crucial in the rugged terrain of Uttarakhand.

Unprecedented Financial Assistance for the State

During the ten years of the Modi government, Uttarakhand has received financial assistance totaling Rs. 1,86,000 crore, a figure that is three and a half times greater than the amount provided by the UPA government between 2004 and 2014. This significant funding has been used to boost infrastructure, improve connectivity, and support disaster recovery efforts.

A Guardian in Times of Crisis

Prime Minister Modi has consistently stood by Uttarakhand during difficult times, offering financial support, strategic guidance, and personal attention to the state’s needs. His leadership has helped transform the state into a model of development, with improved infrastructure, better healthcare, and an expanding economy. The ongoing development projects will continue to shape the future of Uttarakhand, ensuring that it remains a vital and thriving part of the nation.
