Amritsar: Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre, visited the Bhagtanwala grain market on Friday, hours after Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh was shot dead while on duty. The DGP also met the deceased officer’s family and reviewed the investigation with senior police officials.
The ASI, who was deployed with the Police Control Room (PCR), was attacked by unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in the early hours of Friday. Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran district, was taken to a private hospital, where he was declared dead.
DGP Reviews Probe, Orders Examination of All Leads
Yadav was briefed by Amritsar Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill (IPS: 2010: PB) on the incident and the progress of the investigation.

According to the preliminary police inquiry, the attackers allegedly followed Singh before opening fire at close range. Police recovered an empty .30-bore cartridge shell from the scene.
Investigation teams are focusing on:
- CCTV footage from the area to trace the movements of the attackers.
- Technical evidence collected during the investigation.
- Forensic examination of material recovered from the crime scene.
- Identification and arrest of the unidentified assailants.
Police teams have been deployed to follow the CCTV trail and other technical leads, according to officials.
ASI Was on PCR Duty
Harjit Singh was posted with the police control room under Gate Hakima police station and was deployed on PCR duty when the shooting took place. Reports differ on the exact timing, placing the incident in the early hours of Friday, around 2–3 am.
The killing is also being investigated against the backdrop of another recent attack on a Punjab Police ASI in the Amritsar region in May.
DGP Meets Bereaved Family
Before inspecting the crime scene, Yadav met Singh’s family and expressed condolences over the officer’s death.
The Punjab government has announced ₹1 crore in ex-gratia assistance for the family, while an additional insurance payout has also been reported.
The investigation into the killing is ongoing, with police working to identify and apprehend the assailants.
