New Delhi/Jaipur: On the occasion of Civil Services Day, the Rajasthan cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) has emerged as a source of pride, with its officers holding key leadership positions at the highest levels of the Union government.
At present, four central ministries are headed by Secretaries from the Rajasthan cadre, while several other officers from the cadre are serving in influential roles across premier institutions such as NITI Aayog, the Cabinet Secretariat, and the Lok Sabha.
Adding to this prominence, Sanjay Malhotra, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, also belongs to the Rajasthan cadre and is playing a key role in steering the country’s economic reforms.
Four Rajasthan Cadre Officers Leading Central Ministries
Despite the return of current Chief Secretary V. Srinivas to the state after a long tenure at the Centre, Rajasthan cadre officers continue to hold significant positions in New Delhi.
Four senior IAS officers from the cadre are currently serving as Secretaries in major ministries:
- Sudhansh Pant – Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment
- Rajat Kumar Mishra – Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers
- Tanmay Kumar – Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change
- Naresh Pal Gangwar – Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying
These officers are at the helm of policymaking and implementation in their respective ministries, reflecting the cadre’s strong administrative influence.

Beyond ministerial leadership, Rajasthan cadre officers are also playing crucial roles in important national institutions:
- Roli Singh – Chairperson, National Authority for Chemical Weapons Convention
- Rajiv Singh Thakur – Advisor, NITI Aayog
- Rohit Kumar – Additional Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat
- Mugdha Sinha – Managing Director, India Tourism Development Corporation
- Debasish Prusty – Additional Secretary, Department of Financial Services
Their presence underscores the cadre’s wide-ranging contribution to governance, policy formulation, and institutional leadership.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra’s Key Role
A notable highlight is Sanjay Malhotra, who, as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, is at the forefront of India’s financial and monetary policy landscape.
His role is particularly crucial in the current economic environment, where reforms and stability measures are key to sustaining growth.

- Officers in Position: 282
Educational Background Trends
- Arts Graduates: 122 officers (largest group)
- Engineers: 104 officers
- MBBS Graduates: 23 officers
- Public Administration Background: 4 officers
- Teaching Background: 6 officers
Interestingly, among the top 10 IAS officers in the state, including Chief Secretary V. Srinivas, eight have an engineering background, highlighting the growing dominance of technical education in administrative leadership.
A Cadre with Growing Influence
The continued presence of Rajasthan cadre officers at the Centre, particularly in top सचिव-level roles, reflects their administrative competence, policy expertise, and leadership capabilities.
With several senior officers already in key positions and expectations of further elevations in the coming months, the Rajasthan cadre is poised to strengthen its influence even further in India’s governance structure.
