New Delhi/Itanagar: The Centre has prematurely repatriated Rajesh Kumar (IPS: 1995: AGMUT) from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to his parent cadre, setting the stage for his likely appointment as the next Director General of Police (DGP) of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his premature repatriation on November 2, 2026. He is expected to replace S D Singh Jamwal (IPS: 1995: AGMUT) as the head of the Arunachal Pradesh Police.
Kumar is currently serving as Special Director General of the CRPF. During his career spanning more than three decades, he has held several important positions in Jammu and Kashmir and at the CRPF headquarters, with experience in counter-insurgency operations, law and order and force administration.
Who Is Rajesh Kumar?
Rajesh Kumar is a 1995-batch Indian Police Service officer of the AGMUT cadre. He was originally allocated to the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre, which was subsequently merged into the AGMUT cadre.
Born in 1970, Kumar hails from Rajasthan. He holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Rajasthan and formally joined the IPS on September 4, 1995.
Over the years, he has served in several sensitive assignments in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in areas affected by militancy and security challenges.
Key Police Assignments in Jammu and Kashmir
Kumar spent a significant part of his career in Jammu and Kashmir, where he held senior responsibilities in different parts of the Union Territory.
His assignments included Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the North Kashmir Range, covering the Baramulla area, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, and IG of the Special Security Group (SSG).
He was also associated with the Jammu and Kashmir security grid and gained experience in field operations and counter-insurgency work.
From CRPF Operations to Special DG
Kumar joined the CRPF on central deputation around March 2018 as an Inspector General (IG). In June 2019, in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack, he was appointed IG CRPF (Operations), Kashmir, a key operational assignment during a sensitive period for security forces in the region.
During his CRPF tenure, he also served as IG (Administration) at the force’s headquarters around 2023. He was subsequently elevated to the rank of Additional Director General (ADG).
In September 2026, Kumar was promoted to Special Director General of the CRPF on an in-situ basis. His premature repatriation to the parent AGMUT cadre now precedes his likely appointment as Arunachal Pradesh DGP.
Awards and Recognitions
Kumar has received several police service honours during his career. These include the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 2010, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2011, and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2018.
His career has included both field-level security responsibilities in Jammu and Kashmir and senior administrative assignments in the CRPF.
Likely to Take Charge as Arunachal Pradesh DGP
With his return to the AGMUT cadre, Kumar is likely to be appointed as the next DGP of Arunachal Pradesh, replacing S D Singh Jamwal.
His anticipated appointment would bring an officer with experience in Jammu and Kashmir’s security operations and the CRPF’s operational and administrative leadership to the top police post in the state.
Note: The supplied information describes Kumar’s appointment as DGP as likely; it does not include a formal order confirming that he has taken charge.
