New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has appointed Mr. Rakesh Gupta, 1993 batch IRS (Income Tax) officer, as Director General of Income Tax (Vigilance) and Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) Under Ministry of Finance, New Delhi.
The appointment will be effective from the date he assumes charge and will continue until September 30, 2028, the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
Career Highlights
In the first week of August 2025, the CBDT promoted Mr. Gupta to the rank of Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (CCIT). The promotions were approved for the panel year 2025, as per an official order issued by the Ministry of Finance.
Mr. Rakesh Gupta currently serves as Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Central) in Gurugram, Haryana, a position he has held since January 2023. Prior to this, he served as Commissioner of Income Tax at the CBDT from September 2015 to January 2023.
His experience also includes key roles such as:
- Deputy/Joint Advisor, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Delhi
- Additional Director General (Vigilance), CBDT, Delhi
- CIT (C&S), CBDT
Academic Credentials
Mr. Gupta is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where he earned a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering. He further pursued a Master of Arts in Economics from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and an M.Phil in Social Sciences, combining technical, economic, and social expertise in his administrative career.
Significance of Appointment
As DGIT (Vigilance) and CVO, Mr. Gupta will oversee vigilance administration and integrity mechanisms within the CBDT, playing a critical role in maintaining transparency and accountability in India’s direct tax system. His extensive experience in enforcement, policy, and administration positions him as a key figure in safeguarding institutional probity.
Appointment Notification:
The appointment has been issued with the approval of the competent authority and communicated officially by Jatin Kumar, Under Secretary to the Government of India.
