Ranchi: A major infrastructure upgrade is set to transform Ranchi as the city prepares to build its first six-lane smart road at an estimated cost of ₹177 crore. The project aims to modernize urban transport and improve connectivity while integrating sustainable and pedestrian-friendly features.

The development will be executed under the Road Construction Department through the State Highway Authority of Jharkhand. The tender process has already begun, with plans to finalize it by September and commence construction later this year.

Route Plan: Key Urban Corridors to Be Connected

The proposed six-lane corridor will stretch from Vivekananda School Mor to Nayasarai ROB, passing through important urban landmarks.

Main stretch:

  • Vivekananda School Mor
  • Jagannath Temple area
  • Near Jharkhand High Court
  • Up to Nayasarai ROB

A total of 6.089 km will be developed into a six-lane smart road.

Additionally, a 2.12 km stretch beyond Nayasarai ROB up to the Ring Road will be widened into a two-lane road.

Smart Infrastructure with Modern Urban Facilities

The project is designed not just as a road expansion but as a complete smart urban mobility corridor.

Key features include:

  • Dedicated service roads on both sides
  • Separate cycling tracks
  • Wide pedestrian footpaths for safe walking
  • Improved traffic management systems

These features aim to ensure smooth traffic flow and safer movement for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Solar Lighting for Energy-Efficient Road Network

A major highlight of the project is its solar-powered lighting system. The entire stretch will be illuminated using solar energy-based streetlights.

This initiative is expected to:

  • Reduce electricity consumption
  • Promote eco-friendly infrastructure
  • Support sustainable urban development goals

The solar lighting system aligns with the broader vision of making Ranchi a more energy-efficient and smart urban center.

Focus on Safety, Quality, and Traffic Management

The Road Construction Department has emphasized strict quality control during execution. High-grade construction materials will be used to ensure long-term durability.

The road design has been engineered to:

  • Handle heavy traffic loads efficiently
  • Reduce accident risks
  • Improve overall traffic discipline

Authorities have clearly stated that no compromise on construction quality will be tolerated.

Boost to Urban Development and Connectivity

The new smart road is expected to significantly improve connectivity across key institutional and commercial zones, including:

  • Jharkhand High Court area
  • Educational institutions
  • Religious and public landmarks

It will not only ease daily commuting but also contribute to economic activity and urban growth in the region.

The ₹177 crore six-lane smart road project marks a major step toward modern infrastructure development in Ranchi. With features like cycling tracks, service roads, footpaths, and solar lighting, the project is set to redefine urban mobility and support the city’s transition toward a smarter and more sustainable future.
