New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Suman Ray as Executive Director (ED) with effect from September 1, 2026. Before his elevation, Ray was serving as the Regional Director for Maharashtra.
In his new role, Ray will oversee the Department of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and the Premises Department of the central bank.
Suman Ray Appointed RBI Executive Director
Suman Ray assumed charge as Executive Director on September 1, 2026, following his promotion to the senior leadership position at the RBI.
Ray was among five senior RBI officers promoted to the rank of Executive Director earlier this year. The other officers included Gunveer Singh, Monisha Chakraborty, Sudhakar Malli and Ravi Shankar.
His appointment adds to the RBI’s senior management team as the central bank continues to oversee India’s evolving financial and banking ecosystem.

Over Three Decades of Experience at RBI
Ray is a career central banker with more than three decades of experience at the Reserve Bank of India.
During his career, he has worked across several important areas, including:
- Currency management
- Financial inclusion
- Payment and settlement systems
- Consumer education and protection
- Human resources
He has also served as Secretary to the Western Area Local Board, one of the RBI’s four regional advisory boards that assist the central board on local matters.
His diverse experience across banking operations, financial inclusion and payment systems brings extensive institutional knowledge to his new role as Executive Director.
Ray to Oversee DICGC and Premises Department
As Executive Director, Suman Ray will be responsible for the Department of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and the Premises Department, according to the RBI.
DICGC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the RBI and plays an important role in providing deposit insurance protection to bank depositors. Currently, eligible bank deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, subject to applicable rules.
The DICGC also administers credit guarantee schemes, supporting the broader financial stability and banking framework.
Previous Role as Maharashtra Regional Director
Prior to his appointment as Executive Director, Ray served as Regional Director for Maharashtra, giving him experience in overseeing the RBI’s regional operations in one of India’s key financial and economic centres.
His elevation follows a long career within the central bank, during which he has handled responsibilities across multiple operational and policy-related areas.
Strengthening RBI’s Senior Leadership
Ray’s appointment reflects the RBI’s continued focus on experienced institutional leadership across its various departments.
With his extensive experience in currency management, financial inclusion, digital payments, consumer protection and human resources, his new responsibilities bring together areas that are important to the functioning of India’s banking and financial system.
