New Delhi: The Union Government has reappointed Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra to the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as a part-time, non-official director. In a significant addition to the board, former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has also been appointed as a part-time, non-official director.
According to the RBI, both appointments are for a period of four years with effect from August 20, 2026.
The appointments bring together extensive experience from two very different fields – corporate leadership and advanced technology and space research – to the apex governing body of India’s central bank.
Anand Mahindra Reappointed for Four Years
For Anand Mahindra, the latest appointment marks a continuation of his association with the RBI’s Central Board.
He was first nominated to the RBI Central Board in June 2022. His reappointment provides continuity to the board while bringing his experience in areas including manufacturing, technology, rural markets, automotive businesses and financial services.

As Chairman of the Mahindra Group, Mahindra has led one of India’s major diversified business groups, with interests spanning automotive and farm equipment, technology, financial services and other sectors.
His experience with India’s private sector and consumer economy is expected to add a business and industry perspective to the board’s deliberations.
Former ISRO Chief S Somanath Joins RBI Board
The appointment of S. Somanath brings a different area of expertise to the RBI Central Board.
Somanath is a renowned aerospace engineer and rocket scientist who served as the Chairman of ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space, besides heading the Space Commission.
He served as ISRO Chairman from January 2022 to January 2025, during a period that included several major milestones in India’s space programme.
His tenure included the historic Chandrayaan-3 mission, which successfully achieved a soft landing on the Moon in August 2023.
Somanath’s expertise in technology, systems engineering, innovation and large-scale mission management could be particularly relevant as the financial sector becomes increasingly dependent on digital infrastructure and emerging technologies.
Why Somanath’s RBI Appointment Is Significant
Somanath’s induction comes at a time when the RBI and the wider financial system are dealing with rapidly evolving technologies.
The central bank has increasingly focused on areas such as digital payments, financial technology, cybersecurity, resilient digital infrastructure and technology-related risks.
Against this backdrop, the appointment of a former head of India’s premier space organisation brings specialised experience in managing complex technology systems and large-scale national infrastructure.
His experience could provide an additional technological perspective during board-level deliberations on India’s rapidly changing financial ecosystem.

Under his leadership, the Mahindra Group expanded its presence across sectors including automobiles, farm equipment, technology, financial services and other businesses.

His continued presence on the RBI Central Board gives the institution access to the perspective of a senior business leader with experience across manufacturing, technology and consumer-facing businesses.

What Does the RBI Central Board Do?
The Central Board of the RBI is the apex governing body of the central bank and is responsible for overseeing its overall affairs and business.
The board deliberates on matters concerning the functioning of the central bank, including issues related to monetary and financial stability, regulation and supervision, currency management and the RBI’s accounts and operations.
The inclusion of individuals with diverse professional backgrounds allows the board to benefit from perspectives beyond traditional monetary and banking expertise.
The latest appointments therefore bring together corporate experience through Anand Mahindra and technological and scientific expertise through S. Somanath.
Two Appointments, Diverse Expertise
The four-year appointments of Mahindra and Somanath come at an important time for India’s financial system.
While Mahindra’s continued presence provides business and industry continuity, Somanath’s appointment adds expertise from India’s technology and space ecosystem.
Together, the appointments broaden the range of expertise available to the RBI Central Board as India’s economy becomes increasingly digital, technology-driven and globally integrated.
