New Delhi: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, has emerged as the Lowest Bidder (L1) for a major project awarded by the East Coast Railway. The project involves the setting up of a Wagon Periodic Overhauling (POH) Workshop with a capacity of 200 wagons at Kantabanji.

The announcement was made on December 29, 2025, and the project has been awarded to RVNL in the normal course of business.

Project Scope and Timeline

The project entails the design and construction of a state-of-the-art Wagon POH Workshop, aimed at strengthening the maintenance infrastructure and improving the operational efficiency of railway rolling stock under the East Coast Railway zone.

The total project cost, excluding Goods and Services Tax (GST), is Rs 201.23 crore. As per the company’s filing, the project is scheduled to be completed within 18 months from the date of commencement.

Sole Bidder and Strategic Significance

RVNL has been selected as the sole domestic bidder for the project, highlighting the company’s strong technical capabilities and competitive edge in executing complex railway infrastructure works.

Once operational, the workshop will play a crucial role in ensuring timely periodic overhauling of wagons, reducing downtime, and enhancing the overall efficiency and safety of freight operations in the region.

Strengthening Railway Infrastructure

The project aligns with RVNL’s long-term objective of modernizing India’s railway infrastructure. By developing advanced maintenance facilities, RVNL continues to support the Ministry of Railways’ efforts to improve freight capacity, reliability, and operational efficiency across the rail network.
