New Delhi/Mizoram: In a major boost to railway connectivity in Northeast India, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna PSU and India’s leading steel producer, has supplied approximately 15,000 metric tons of steel for the recently inaugurated Bairabi–Sairang railway project in Mizoram.
The 51-kilometer railway line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the Government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure and connectivity in the northeastern region.
SAIL Supplied High-Quality Steel from Multiple Plants
Of the total 15,000 metric tons supplied:
10,000 metric tons were R-260 grade prime rails, produced by SAIL’s flagship Bhilai Steel Plant—a trusted source for Indian Railways.
The remaining 5,000 metric tons comprised plates, TMT bars, and structural steel, sourced from SAIL’s Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bhilai, and Burnpur steel plants.
This comprehensive supply supported the construction of crucial railway infrastructure, including tunnels, bridges, and embankments.
Strategic Role in Nation-Building and Northeast Development
SAIL’s contribution to the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Project exemplifies its longstanding role as a partner in India’s nation-building initiatives. The project not only enhances connectivity within Mizoram but also integrates the state better with the national rail network, facilitating economic growth, logistics, and mobility.
SAIL has previously played a key role in landmark national projects, including:
- Chenab Railway Bridge
- Atal Tunnel
- Bandra-Worli Sea Link
- Bogibeel and Dhola-Sadiya Bridges
- Jiribam–Tupul–Imphal Broad Gauge Railway
With this latest contribution, SAIL reaffirms its commitment to supporting the Government of India’s Act East Policy and the broader infrastructure development of the northeastern states.
