33,000 Trained Under SAMARTH Centres as India Expands Industry 4.0 Skills

SAMARTH centres have trained around 33,000 people, while advanced welding and other government skilling programmes are expanding opportunities in India’s manufacturing and capital goods sectors.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Heavy Industries is expanding skill development initiatives to prepare workers for advanced manufacturing and Industry 4.0 technologies. Under its SAMARTH centres, around 33,000 people have been trained so far.

The initiatives are being implemented under the Scheme for Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector.

SAMARTH Centres Promote Industry 4.0

The Ministry has established four Smart Advanced Manufacturing and Rapid Transformation Hub (SAMARTH) Centres to promote Industry 4.0 skills.

These centres focus on helping workers and industry professionals adapt to modern manufacturing technologies.

The Ministry has also established a Common Engineering Facility Centre (CEFC) at the Welding Research Institute (WRI), BHEL, Trichy, for training in advanced welding technologies.

Over 8,500 Trained in Advanced Welding

The CEFC at WRI, BHEL, Trichy has trained more than 8,500 people during the last three years.

The initiative aims to strengthen specialised skills needed in advanced manufacturing and welding-related industries.

The Ministry has also supported the development of qualification packages through sector skill councils:

  • 23 qualification packages by ASDC
  • 23 qualification packages by CGSSC
  • 12 qualification packages by IASC SSC

PMKVY 4.0 Trains Over 27 Lakh

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is also strengthening the country’s skilling ecosystem through schemes such as PMKVY, Jan Shikshan Sansthan and NAPS.

Under PMKVY 4.0, which has been implemented since FY 2022-23, 27,31,699 candidates were trained during the last three years.

The scheme covers various sectors, including heavy industries and manufacturing.

Over 12.5 Lakh ITI Enrolments

The government’s skilling efforts also extend to Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).

During the last three years, 12,53,158 candidates enrolled in ITI courses under the Craftsmen Training Scheme in the Capital Goods and Manufacturing sector.

As of June 30, 2026, PMKVY 4.0 had delivered training through 16,946 training centres, including 6,993 educational institutions such as schools, colleges, ITIs, universities, skill universities and polytechnics.

Focus on Industry-Ready Skills

PMKVY 4.0 follows a demand-driven approach, with training centres accredited or affiliated based on proposals and identified skill gaps.

Together, these initiatives aim to build a workforce skilled in advanced manufacturing, Industry 4.0 and specialised technologies, while bridging skill gaps and expanding access to industry-oriented training.
