Bilaspur: In a significant step towards enhancing workplace hygiene and sustainability in its mining zones, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has successfully installed 43 bio-toilets under the Government of India’s Special Campaign 5.0. This initiative is aimed at fostering inclusivity, improving sanitation, and promoting sustainable practices within the company’s operational areas.

The bio-toilets have been installed at two key locations within SECL’s operational zones: 16 bio-toilets were inaugurated in the Sohagpur Area, while 27 bio-toilets were commissioned in the Bhatgaon Area. These installations are part of SECL’s ongoing commitment to improving sanitation infrastructure, particularly in mining areas where conventional facilities are often scarce.

A Step Toward Clean and Sustainable Workplaces

The bio-toilets are part of SECL’s broader efforts to align with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), which aims to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability across the country. These toilets use microbial action to convert human waste into non-toxic water and gas, significantly reducing environmental pollution and conserving precious water resources.

SECL’s initiative also supports the country’s push for eco-friendly solutions and clean energy alternatives in the mining sector. By focusing on sustainable waste management, SECL is making strides to reduce the environmental impact of coal mining activities.

Promoting Inclusivity and Gender Equality in the Workplace

In addition to the environmental benefits, the installation of bio-toilets emphasizes inclusivity and dignity for all employees, particularly for women working in field and mining areas. By ensuring safe and hygienic sanitation facilities closer to the workplace, SECL is improving working conditions and promoting gender-friendly infrastructure in its operational areas.

The bio-toilet installations help address a major challenge faced by women working in remote mining zones—access to safe and clean sanitation. This move ensures that women employees can work with greater comfort and dignity, enhancing overall productivity and morale.

Supporting Special Campaign 5.0: A Nationwide Drive for Cleanliness and Efficiency

The installation of these bio-toilets is part of the Government of India’s Special Campaign 5.0, which took place from October 2 to October 31, 2025. This nationwide initiative is led by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances and aims to enhance cleanliness, efficient record management, and the disposal of pending matters across Ministries and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

SECL has actively participated in the campaign through several activities aimed at improving sanitation, digital transformation, and public service delivery. By promoting such initiatives, SECL is contributing to the national goal of achieving cleaner workplaces, improved public service, and enhanced governance.

SECL’s Commitment to Responsible Mining Practices

The installation of bio-toilets under Special Campaign 5.0 further demonstrates SECL’s commitment to responsible mining practices and improving the quality of life for its employees and communities surrounding its coalfields. As part of its sustainability efforts, SECL continues to invest in infrastructure projects that promote environmental protection and social welfare.

By supporting initiatives that reduce environmental impact and improve workers’ well-being, SECL is playing a key role in advancing both sustainable development and inclusive growth in India’s mining sector.
