New Delhi: Veteran Indian diplomat Dinesh K. Patnaik is likely to be appointed as India’s new High Commissioner to Canada, sources familiar with the matter have indicated. A 1990 batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Patnaik’s potential appointment comes at a time when India-Canada relations are navigating a complex geopolitical phase.

An Illustrious Career in Diplomacy

Dinesh Patnaik is a seasoned career diplomat with more than 25 years of service in diverse and strategic roles across the globe. He has held several key positions in Indian missions abroad and within the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), earning a reputation for his versatility and leadership.

His foreign postings include stints in Geneva, Dhaka, Beijing, and Vienna, offering him rich exposure to multilateral diplomacy and regional affairs. Notably, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Vienna from 2009 to 2012.

Ambassadorial Tenures Across Continents

Patnaik has previously held ambassadorial positions in Cambodia (2012–2015) and the Kingdom of Morocco (2015–2016). These postings saw him actively engaged in enhancing India’s bilateral relationships, focusing on economic cooperation, cultural exchanges, and development partnerships.

From 2016 to 2018, he served as the Deputy High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, one of India’s most significant diplomatic missions.

Leadership Roles in the Ministry of External Affairs

Within the MEA, Patnaik has led several key divisions. He served as Additional Secretary (Indian Ocean Region) and later as Additional Secretary (Consular, Passport, Visa & Overseas Indian Affairs) — roles that dealt with strategic maritime cooperation and India’s diaspora policies respectively.

Currently, he serves as the Director General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), where he has been instrumental in expanding India’s soft power and cultural outreach abroad.

Academic Excellence and International Training

Ambassador Patnaik combines diplomatic acumen with academic distinction. He holds an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kolkata, and a Master’s degree in Advanced International Studies from the University of Vienna.
