Aizawl: In a significant development in Mizoram’s administrative landscape, 1997-batch IPS officer Sharad Agarwal of the AGMUT cadre officially assumed charge as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Mizoram on Wednesday, succeeding Anil Shukla, who has been transferred to Delhi.
Guard of Honour and Senior-Level Introductions
Upon his arrival, DGP Agarwal was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Khatla, Aizawl. The ceremony was followed by an introductory meeting with senior officers of the rank of AIG and above, as well as key unit heads stationed in Aizawl.
After taking charge, Agarwal paid courtesy visits to Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Vijay Kumar Singh, Chief Minister Lalduhoma, and Home Minister K. Sapdanga, affirming his commitment to strengthening Mizoram’s internal security and policing systems.

A Rich Policing Legacy Across India
With over 25 years of experience in diverse policing roles across India, Agarwal brings deep insight into law and order, investigations, public safety, and administrative reforms.
He began his career as Superintendent of Police, South Puducherry, handling labour unrest and large-scale religious events such as the Shani Peyarchi Festival in Karaikal.
In Delhi, as Additional DCP and DCP, he oversaw security for events like the MCD elections and India International Trade Fair, and dealt with urban unrest and public order challenges.
During his time in Goa (2004–07), Agarwal coordinated policing for the first International Film Festival of India in the state and cracked down on drug-related crimes involving foreign nationals.
In Mayapuri, Delhi (2008–11), he handled the high-profile radioactive material leak case, earning national and international attention for his swift investigation.
As DIG in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, he introduced critical reforms in personnel management and infrastructure between 2011 and 2014.
Later, as Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Delhi, he managed logistics and movement for high-security events like the 3rd India-Africa Forum Summit.
Stellar CBI Tenure and Recent Roles
Sharad Agarwal also held key investigative roles at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)-
- Led Special Investigation Teams (SITs) into fake encounter cases in Manipur.
- Supervised probes into high-profile corruption and murder cases.
- As Joint Director (Training), he launched modernization initiatives in capacity-building for CBI personnel.
In his most recent assignment as Special Commissioner of Police, Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Delhi, Agarwal handled–
- Ponzi schemes and large-scale economic frauds
