SJVN Achieves Milestone as 660 MW Unit of Buxar Thermal Power Project Joins National Grid – Know More

Shimal, Bihar: State-owned SJVN Ltd. successfully synchronized the first unit (660 MW) of its 1320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project (BTPP) with the National Grid. The announcement was made by SJVN Chairman & Managing Director, Bhupendra Gupta. This milestone paves the way for the commencement of the Commercial Operation Date (COD) process.

Strengthening Bihar’s Energy Infrastructure

Bhupendra Gupta lauded the project team and stakeholders for their dedication, noting the project will help meet growing energy demand in India. He added that BTPP will contribute to sustained economic growth in Bihar.

Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel) at SJVN, highlighted that synchronization of the first unit will enhance SJVN’s overall energy generation capacity and reinforce its energy portfolio.

Advanced Technology and Strategic Implementation

The 1320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project, comprising 2×660 MW units, is situated in Chausa, District Buxar, Bihar. It is implemented by SJVN Thermal Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN. Equipped with supercritical technology, the project ensures higher efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

With a total investment of ₹13,756.56 crore, BTPP is projected to generate 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually. About 85% of this power will be supplied to the state of Bihar, helping address peak-hour shortages and strengthen the regional grid.

Economic and Social Impact

The project is expected to deliver substantial economic and social benefits to Bihar and the Eastern region. Enhanced power availability will support industrial growth, local employment, and improve quality of life for residents.
