New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved ₹142 crore for upgrading the electric traction system from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV on the 73 Route Kilometre (RKM) Savalyapuram-Guntur section of South Coast Railway. The project will cover 146 Track Kilometres (TKM) and is aimed at strengthening traction capacity to support growing railway operations.

The upgrade is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise its electric traction infrastructure, improve network capacity and enhance operational efficiency on key railway routes.

2×25 kV Traction System to Strengthen Power Supply

The project will upgrade the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to 2×25 kV across the Savalyapuram-Guntur section.

The enhanced traction system will strengthen the power supply infrastructure required for electric train operations. It will help the railway network handle increasing traffic requirements more efficiently while improving the capacity and reliability of the section.

Key project details include:

  • Project cost: ₹142 crore
  • Section: Savalyapuram-Guntur
  • Route length: 73 RKM
  • Track coverage: 146 TKM
  • Existing system: 1×25 kV
  • Upgraded system: 2×25 kV
  • Railway: South Coast Railway

Project Covers Key HUN Route 8 Section

The Savalyapuram-Guntur section forms part of HUN Route 8, an important railway route covering:

  • Vasco
  • Gadag
  • Guntakal
  • Nandyal
  • Savalyapuram
  • Guntur
  • Vijayawada

The traction system upgrade on the Savalyapuram-Guntur section is expected to reinforce the infrastructure on this route and support smoother electric train operations.

Capacity Enhancement to Support Growing Rail Traffic

With railway traffic continuing to grow, strengthening traction infrastructure is important for maintaining reliable electric train operations. The upgraded system will provide stronger traction capacity on the section and enable Indian Railways to respond more effectively to increasing operational requirements.

The project is also expected to improve the overall reliability of the traction infrastructure, supporting efficient movement of trains along the section.

Focus on Modernisation of Railway Infrastructure

The ₹142 crore project reflects Indian Railways’ broader focus on upgrading railway infrastructure and preparing the network for future traffic growth.

By increasing the capacity of the electric traction system, the project will contribute to:

  • Strengthening power supply for electric trains
  • Improving traction capacity
  • Supporting growing traffic requirements
  • Enhancing operational efficiency
  • Improving the reliability of the railway network
  • Preparing the route for future traffic growth

The upgradation of the Savalyapuram-Guntur section will therefore strengthen an important part of South Coast Railway’s network while supporting the continued modernisation of India’s railway infrastructure.
