Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Government has accepted the Voluntary Retirement from Service (VRS) request of 2016-batch IPS officer Sunil Kumar Mehta, bringing his police career to an end with effect from August 31, 2026.
Mehta, a Madhya Pradesh-cadre IPS officer, was serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone-4, Indore, at the time of his voluntary retirement.
A State Police Service (SPS) promotee, Mehta was allotted to the IPS in the 2016 batch and was formally inducted into the service on July 3, 2023. His career has included field assignments in Madhya Pradesh, including postings as SP, Rural Indore, and SP, Seoni, apart from other sensitive policing assignments.
Who Is Sunil Kumar Mehta?
Sunil Kumar Mehta is a 2016-batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre who entered the IPS through the State Police Service promotion route.
Born on June 15, 1970, Mehta is a native of Madhya Pradesh. His IPS identity number is 20162977.
Although allotted to the 2016 IPS batch, his formal induction into the IPS took place on July 3, 2023, after his career in the Madhya Pradesh State Police Service.
He was known within the state police administration for his experience in ground-level policing, field administration and handling sensitive situations, with several assignments requiring close coordination between law enforcement and local administration.

From State Police Service to IPS

With this decision, Mehta’s formal career in the Indian Police Service has concluded.
His VRS comes after more than three decades in policing when his service in the State Police Service prior to his IPS induction is taken into account.
