Chennai: In a significant police reshuffle ordered following directions from the Election Commission of India, the Tamil Nadu government has transferred four IPS officers, including three deputy commissioners from Chennai police.
The transfer orders were issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Dheeraj Kumar, with officers being reassigned as district Superintendents of Police in key districts ahead of the electoral process.
Three Chennai Deputy Commissioners Shifted to District SP Posts
Among those transferred are three officers serving in the Greater Chennai Police.
Officers Transferred
- D N Hari
- Sujit Kumar
- N Shreenatha
These officers were serving as Deputy Commissioners in Greater Chennai Police before the latest reshuffle.
New District Postings
The transferred officers have been posted as Superintendents of Police in the following districts:
- D N Hari → SP, Karur
- Sujit Kumar → SP, Nagapattinam
- N Shreenatha → SP, Virudhunagar
These districts are considered administratively important for law-and-order management during election periods.
ATS Officer Posted as Erode SP
A fourth officer has also been transferred under the same order.
D V Kiran Shruthi, who was serving at the Anti-Terrorism Squad headquarters in Chennai, has now been posted as SP of Erode.
Her shift brings field district responsibility after a security-focused assignment.
Election Commission’s Role in Transfers
Such transfers are often ordered by the Election Commission to ensure neutrality and administrative balance before elections.
The Commission regularly reviews postings of officers holding sensitive law-and-order responsibilities, especially those stationed in urban police units or districts where election management is critical.
Why These Transfers Matter
District SPs play a central role during elections because they supervise:
- law and order
- deployment of police forces
- movement monitoring
- poll security coordination
- enforcement of election guidelines
For this reason, postings ordered during election periods attract close administrative attention.
Administrative Significance
The transfer of Chennai-based officers to district assignments also reflects the state’s use of experienced urban police officers in field-sensitive districts.
This can strengthen district policing during politically active periods.
