Rajnath Singh Highlights Territorial Army’s Role in Security, Disaster Relief and Nation Building

New Delhi: Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence, where discussions focused on the Territorial Army, its evolving role and measures to further strengthen the force.

Senior officials briefed committee members on the Territorial Army’s mandate, achievements and operational role, while members offered suggestions to enhance its overall effectiveness.

Territorial Army Supports Viksit Bharat Vision

Addressing the meeting, Rajnath Singh described the Territorial Army’s contribution as significant in advancing the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat.

“The Territorial Army is a living embodiment of the ‘Citizen-Soldier’ concept. While its members engage in civilian pursuits, they simultaneously don the uniform to safeguard the borders and maintain internal security.”

The Minister said that while the armed forces primarily focus on national security, the Territorial Army also contributes to environmental conservation, disaster relief and social welfare.

Creates Reserve Force for National Emergencies

Rajnath Singh said the Territorial Army strengthens the country’s defence preparedness by creating a reserve of trained personnel who can be deployed whenever required.

He added that after completing their service, Territorial Army personnel return to civilian life and serve as a bridge between society and the military, encouraging more young people to join the armed forces.

44,400 Personnel Across 59 Units

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Territorial Army comprises around 44,400 personnel organised into 59 units.

The Minister described the force as among the first responders during natural disasters, citing its relief and rescue operations during the Kerala floods, Odisha cyclone, and the recent floods in Assam.

10 Crore Saplings Planted Under Ecological Task Forces

Highlighting the force’s environmental initiatives, Rajnath Singh said the Ecological Task Forces of the Territorial Army have planted around 10 crore saplings, with a survival rate of 80–85%.

He said the initiative supports the Prime Minister’s Mission LiFE and Panchamrit goals while contributing to climate change mitigation.

The Minister also appreciated the Territorial Army personnel deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for promoting the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.
