Jaduguda: The Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), a public sector enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), began its Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations at Jaduguda on October 4, marking 60 years since its incorporation in 1967.
The event brought together senior DAE officials, scientists, engineers, technical personnel, employees, media representatives and other stakeholders to highlight UCIL’s contribution to India’s indigenous uranium mining and processing capabilities.
Seema Jain (IAS:1991: PB), Member-Finance, Atomic Energy Commission, attended the programme as the chief guest. During her visit, she toured UCIL’s Technology Demonstration Pilot Plant at C, R&D, Jaduguda, and the proposed site of the Dark Matter Laboratory of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics at the 815-metre level of the Jaduguda underground mine.
Jain said, “The Diamond Jubilee Year of UCIL is a celebration of six decades of scientific capability, institutional experience and dedicated service to the nation.”
She also paid tribute to Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha and the scientists and personnel who contributed to developing India’s uranium mining and processing capabilities.
Journalists’ Workshop Gives Media Access to UCIL Facilities
A Journalists’ Workshop was organised at UCIL’s Information Centre at Narwapahar as part of the celebrations. Media delegates interacted with scientists, engineers and technical experts and visited uranium mining and milling facilities.

The visit covered mining operations, ore handling and processing systems, along with the technologies and practices used at UCIL’s operational sites.
A separate DAE Technology Exhibition was also organised for school students. It showcased technologies and applications developed by various DAE units and institutions and highlighted applications of nuclear energy.
DAE, UCIL Leadership Highlights Future Role
DAE Secretary and Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty conveyed his greetings on the occasion and said the anniversary was an opportunity to recognise UCIL’s contribution and reaffirm the importance of innovation and capability building under India’s Nuclear Energy Mission.
UCIL Chairman and Managing Director Dr Kacham Anand Rao said the organisation had developed expertise and infrastructure in uranium mining and processing over six decades while strengthening its capabilities in technology, safety and environmental management.
