Lucknow/Sultanpur: In a major step towards improving the working conditions of police personnel in Uttar Pradesh, Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna, a 1991 batch IPS officer, announced that policemen will now be entitled to weekly leave. The announcement comes as the state police department has received a significant boost in its constable strength, making it feasible to implement this long-awaited welfare measure.
Addressing the media during a brief stop at the Police Training Center in Amhat, Sultanpur, on his return journey from Varanasi to Lucknow Tuesday night, the DGP confirmed that this new arrangement will enhance the morale and efficiency of the force, enabling them to tackle crime more effectively.
Focus on Welfare After Force Augmentation
“For a long time, due to the shortage of personnel, we were unable to take up initiatives aimed at the welfare of our police force,” said DGP Rajiv Krishna. “Now that we have a substantial number of constables, weekly offs will soon be implemented. This will not only boost morale but also allow our personnel to focus on law enforcement with renewed energy.”
The matter of granting weekly leave has been under consideration for some time, and the DGP’s confirmation signals that the department is now poised to act on it promptly.
Crime Control Efforts Continue with Full Dedication
In response to questions on persistent crime despite frequent arrests and encounters, DGP Krishna stated that action against organized crime falls strictly within the legal framework and is being carried out systematically. “For spontaneous crimes, our teams are taking swift and tough action. Courts are playing their role in delivering justice, and we are committed to upholding the law,” he emphasized.
On-Ground Law & Order Review in Sultanpur
During his stop in Sultanpur, the DGP held a review meeting with key district-level officials, including District Magistrate Kumar Harsh, Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh, and IG Ayodhya Praveen Kumar Singh. Discussions focused on current law and order conditions in the region.
He explained that his visit was part of a route inspection following a high-level meeting in Varanasi with the Home Minister and the Chief Minister. “While returning, I am assessing the law and order scenario in various districts to ensure coordination and preparedness,” he said.
