Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has significantly strengthened transparency and accountability in its Public Distribution System (PDS) through the large-scale deployment of GPS-enabled vehicles for foodgrain transportation. The technology-driven monitoring mechanism has emerged as a decisive tool in eliminating theft, leakage, and black marketing of foodgrains during transit.
Real-Time Monitoring from Depots to Fair Price Shops
More than 5,000 vehicles involved in foodgrain lifting across the state have been fitted with GPS devices, enabling real-time tracking from Food Corporation of India (FCI) depots to Fair Price Shops. The system continuously monitors vehicle movement, route deviations, stoppages, and delivery timelines, creating a strong digital surveillance chain across the entire supply route.
Officials said that the implementation of GPS tracking, combined with the Single Stage Door Step Delivery system, has ensured that every sack of foodgrain is accounted for. This has led to a sharp reduction in diversion and manipulation, which were earlier major challenges in the distribution process.
Mandatory GPS Tracking During Kharif Marketing Season
During the Kharif Marketing Season 2025–26, the state government made GPS tracking mandatory for paddy transportation. A total of 3,773 vehicles used to transport paddy from procurement centres to rice mills across districts have been equipped with GPS devices.
In addition, 1,428 vehicles transporting coarse grains such as maize, jowar, and bajra have also been brought under GPS surveillance. This has ensured end-to-end transparency from procurement and storage to final distribution.
Single Stage Door Step Delivery Strengthens Accountability
The state has discontinued the earlier block-level godown system and replaced it with the Single Stage Door Step Delivery model. Under this system, foodgrains are transported directly from FCI depots to Fair Price Shops.
Transportation contracts are awarded through an e-tendering process, minimizing human intervention and ensuring greater accountability. When integrated with GPS tracking, the system has become a cornerstone of transparency and efficiency in the Public Distribution System.
Timely Delivery to Beneficiaries
In the financial year 2025–26 so far, a total of 8.03 lakh metric tonnes of foodgrains and coarse grains have been allocated to beneficiaries across the state. Additionally, 36,850.35 metric tonnes of sugar have been distributed to Antyodaya households.
Officials said GPS-based monitoring has ensured timely delivery without quantity reduction or diversion, safeguarding the interests of beneficiaries.
Government’s Message: Zero Tolerance for Foodgrain Theft
The Yogi Adityanath government has conveyed a clear message that government foodgrains will no longer go missing during transportation. Through the use of advanced technology, strict monitoring, and systemic reforms, Uttar Pradesh has demonstrated that longstanding issues such as foodgrain theft and black marketing can be effectively eliminated.
