New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is set to launch its Centenary Year celebrations on October 1, 2025, marking 100 years since its establishment as India’s premier constitutional body for civil services recruitment. The commemorative year will run until October 1, 2026, featuring a wide array of events, reforms, and commemorative initiatives.
A Century of Public Service and Meritocracy
Established on October 1, 1926, under the Government of India Act, 1919 and following the recommendations of the Lee Commission (1924), the Commission was initially known as the Public Service Commission. It was renamed the Federal Public Service Commission in 1937 and took its present name, Union Public Service Commission, on January 26, 1950, following India’s transition to a Republic.
“Since its inception, UPSC has been a symbol of transparency, fairness, and meritocracy,” said UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar, adding that the Commission has remained committed to selecting the most deserving candidates for senior government roles.
Plans for the Centenary Year
- Launch of a special Centenary Year logo and tagline
- Year-long celebrations and reform-oriented initiatives
- Enhanced employee participation in planning and execution
- Focus on modernization and transparency in recruitment processes
Ajay Kumar noted that the milestone represents “an opportunity to reflect on the Commission’s proud legacy, identify areas of improvement, and chart a roadmap for the next 100 years in public service.”
The celebrations will also serve as a platform to reaffirm the core principles of merit, integrity, and inclusivity that have guided the Commission over the last century.
