Uttar Pradesh Launches Statewide Drive to Identify Illegal Foreign Nationals for Social Harmony and Resource Management

CM Yogi Adityanath Directs Strict Verification Along Nepal Border and Major Cities as State Prepares Action Against Illegal Immigrants
Indian Masterminds Stories

Lucknow: In a major move to strengthen internal security, social harmony, and better management of resources, the Uttar Pradesh government has accelerated its campaign to identify illegal foreign nationals residing in the state. Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, district magistrates and police officials have been instructed to conduct thorough document verification and prioritize the identification of individuals residing illegally.

Strategic Importance of Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh’s unique geographical position—bordering eight states, one Union Territory, and Nepal—adds strategic significance to this initiative. In recent years, border districts have witnessed rising instances of instability, false identities, and illegal entries, which directly impact law and order in the state. Illegal immigrants living in urban centers using forged identities pose challenges not only to governance but also to social balance and the equitable distribution of resources.

Enhanced Verification and Strict Action

The state administration and UP Police are working together to speed up verification and identification processes. Authorities have emphasized that innocent residents will not face any undue inconvenience, while individuals using fraudulent documents or involved in suspicious activities will face strict action. Temporary detention centers are being established across districts to securely hold individuals until verification is completed. This measure is expected to aid accurate fact-finding while ensuring minimal strain on local public services.

Impact on Resources and Urban Areas

Illegal foreign nationals strain local resources, government schemes, and employment opportunities. Many attempt to exploit government benefits using fake documents, directly harming the genuinely eligible population. Rapidly growing urban areas such as Lucknow, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Varanasi are particularly affected due to high population density and mounting pressure on resources.

Historical Context and Expert Concerns

According to former Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, around 20 million illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were residing in India as of 2016. Additionally, in 2017, he noted that over 40,000 illegal Rohingya migrants were present in the country. Experts highlight that districts bordering Nepal face higher risks of illegal entry, forged documents, and suspicious activities, making timely identification critical.

Significance of the Campaign

This campaign is seen as a vital step to strengthen law and order, social cohesion, and resource management while preparing the state to face future security challenges. By proactively identifying illegal foreign nationals, Uttar Pradesh aims to create a safer and more stable environment for its residents.
