IRAS officer Ananth Rupanagudi has shared on social media medium X some information on railway history. The railway bureaucrat wrote that it was the Sind & Punjab Railway company that laid the line from Multan to Lahore between 1859-1865. The line runs nearly straight for 219 miles connecting the two cities, with 114 miles of it being totally straight.

He further informed that “the steepest gradient was 1 in 600, and only 9 small bridges were needed, 6 of which were built within 5 miles of Lahore.”

Very soon, Amritsar was connected with Lahore, and the contract to connect Amritsar with Ghaziabad (303 miles) with a rail line was given in 1865.
