Explained: Why India Is Looking At Airbus A330 For The Future Netra Mk3 AWACS

DRDO and the Indian Air Force are reportedly studying a future Netra Mk3 AWACS platform based on the Airbus A330. The proposed heavy airborne surveillance aircraft could provide full 360-degree radar coverage and strengthen India's long-term air defence capabilities.

New Delhi: The Netra Mk3 AWACS programme could become India’s next major airborne surveillance project after the completion of the Netra Mk2 programme. Reports suggest that the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are studying a heavy Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) platform based on the Airbus A330 aircraft for deployment in the 2030s. While no official approval has been announced, the concept reflects India’s long-term goal of building a stronger indigenous airborne surveillance network.

The proposed system is expected to complement existing Netra and Phalcon aircraft while providing full 360-degree radar coverage and longer mission endurance.

What Is The Netra Mk3 AWACS Programme

The Netra Mk3 is being discussed as a future heavy AWACS platform that could follow the Netra Mk2 programme currently under development.

According to defence reports, the aircraft may be built around the widebody Airbus A330 platform and could become India’s first indigenous heavy AWACS system with seamless 360-degree radar coverage.

Unlike smaller AEW&C aircraft, a heavy AWACS acts as a flying command center that can monitor large airspaces, track multiple threats, coordinate fighter aircraft, and support air defence operations in real time.

Why Is The Airbus A330 Being Considered for the Netra Mk3 AWACS Programme

The Airbus A330 offers significantly more internal space, electrical power generation, fuel capacity, and endurance compared to smaller aircraft currently used in India’s airborne surveillance fleet. A larger aircraft can carry:

  • More radar equipment
  • Additional mission operators
  • Advanced computers and processing systems
  • Larger cooling systems
  • More communication equipment

These capabilities are essential for a next-generation AWACS platform.

Longer Flight Time

One of the biggest advantages of the A330 is its ability to remain airborne for extended periods. This would allow the aircraft to monitor large areas for longer durations, improving surveillance along India’s northern and western borders.

How Will Netra Mk3 Differ From Netra Mk2

Netra Mk2 Uses Airbus A321

The ongoing Netra Mk2 programme is based on six Airbus A321 aircraft acquired from Air India. The project includes indigenous radars, sensors, electronic intelligence systems, and battle management equipment being developed by DRDO’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS).

Netra Mk3 Could Deliver Full 360-Degree Coverage

The proposed Netra Mk3 is expected to feature a large radar dome mounted above the aircraft. This design would provide complete 360-degree surveillance coverage, eliminating blind spots and significantly improving situational awareness. By comparison, Netra Mk2 is expected to provide approximately 300-degree coverage using multiple radar arrays.

Why Does India Need More AWACS Aircraft

India currently operates:

  • Three Israeli Phalcon AWACS mounted on IL-76 aircraft
  • Netra AEW&C aircraft developed by DRDO
  • Six Netra Mk2 aircraft under development

Experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for a larger fleet of airborne surveillance aircraft to support operations across multiple fronts and maintain continuous monitoring capabilities.

Lessons From Recent Operations

Airborne surveillance systems play a critical role in detecting enemy aircraft, missiles, drones, and other aerial threats. These platforms also help coordinate fighters, air defence networks, and military operations over large areas.

Netra Mk2 Remains The Current Priority

Despite discussions about the future Mk3 platform, DRDO’s immediate focus remains the Netra Mk2 programme. The six Airbus A321 aircraft are currently being prepared and modified before integration of indigenous mission systems and advanced sensors.

The programme represents one of India’s most ambitious airborne surveillance projects and is expected to significantly enhance the IAF’s operational capabilities.

Indigenous Defence Push Continues

The gradual progression from Netra Mk1 to Mk2 and potentially Mk3 reflects India’s long-term strategy of building indigenous airborne surveillance and battle management capabilities. If approved, the Netra Mk3 could become one of the most advanced defence aircraft programmes undertaken by India in the coming decades.

FAQs

Why Is Airbus A330 Being Considered For Netra Mk3?

The Airbus A330 offers greater payload capacity, longer flight endurance, higher electrical power generation, and more space for advanced radar and mission systems than smaller aircraft.

What Is The Netra Mk3 AWACS Programme?

The Netra Mk3 is a proposed future heavy AWACS platform that may be developed by DRDO and the Indian Air Force using the Airbus A330 aircraft to provide advanced airborne surveillance and 360-degree radar coverage.

How Is Netra Mk3 Different From Netra Mk2?

Netra Mk2 is based on the Airbus A321 and is designed for around 300-degree coverage, while the proposed Netra Mk3 could feature a traditional radar dome offering full 360-degree surveillance coverage.
