Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is preparing to increase monthly pensions for senior citizens, destitute women and persons with disabilities from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500. If approved, the proposed increase could benefit more than 1.21 crore pensioners across the state.

The proposal has received in-principle approval and is expected to be placed before the state Cabinet for a final decision. The increase has not yet been formally implemented, and beneficiaries will have to wait for the government to complete the approval process.

The proposed revision aims to provide additional financial support to people who often depend on pension assistance to meet their daily expenses.

Monthly Pension May Increase by ₹500

Under the proposal, eligible beneficiaries would receive ₹500 more every month. This would raise the annual pension amount from ₹12,000 to ₹18,000, providing an additional ₹6,000 per beneficiary each year.

The increase could offer some relief to people who have limited or no regular sources of income. For elderly people, the additional amount could help cover essential expenses such as food, medicines and other household needs. Destitute women and persons with disabilities could also benefit from the higher monthly assistance.

However, the actual payment of the revised amount will depend on Cabinet approval and the government’s subsequent implementation orders.

More Than 1.21 Crore Beneficiaries Could Benefit

The proposed increase covers three major social security pension categories in Uttar Pradesh: old-age pension, destitute women’s pension and disability pension.

According to media reports, the state has more than 67 lakh beneficiaries under the old-age pension scheme, over 42 lakh under the destitute women’s pension scheme and more than 12 lakh under the disability pension scheme.

Together, these categories account for over 1.21 crore beneficiaries.

The scale of coverage makes the proposed revision significant for social welfare delivery in the state. If implemented, the increase would raise the monthly assistance available to eligible beneficiaries across all three categories.

Pension Support for Vulnerable Groups

Social security pensions provide financial assistance to people who may face difficulties earning a regular income. For many beneficiaries, these payments help meet basic needs and reduce their dependence on family members or other sources of support.

The proposed increase could be particularly helpful for elderly people who have limited savings, women without adequate financial support and persons with disabilities who face additional day-to-day expenses.

Although the additional ₹500 may not cover all rising household costs, it could help beneficiaries manage some essential expenses. The impact will also depend on the regularity of payments and the timely implementation of the revised rates.

What Has Changed Since the Previous Pension Revision?

According to reports, the Uttar Pradesh government increased the monthly pension for these categories from ₹500 to ₹1,000 after 2017.

The proposed revision would take the monthly amount to ₹1,500, marking another increase in the state’s social security assistance.

If approved, the revised pension would provide beneficiaries with an additional ₹6,000 annually compared with the existing rate. The increase would apply to eligible beneficiaries covered by the approved scheme provisions.

When Will Beneficiaries Receive ₹1,500?

The proposal is still awaiting final Cabinet approval. The government must complete the approval process and issue the necessary implementation instructions before beneficiaries can receive the revised amount.

Media reports have indicated that the government is preparing to move the proposal forward, with the revised assistance potentially taking effect during the current financial year if approved. However, the final effective date has not been officially confirmed in the information currently available.

Beneficiaries should therefore continue to rely on official government notifications for confirmation of the revised pension amount and payment schedule.

A Proposed Boost to Social Security in Uttar Pradesh

The planned pension increase reflects the state’s effort to strengthen financial support for vulnerable sections of society. If the government approves and implements the proposal, more than 1.21 crore beneficiaries could receive additional assistance every month.

The key next step is Cabinet approval, followed by formal implementation. Until then, the increase from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 remains a proposal rather than an implemented benefit.

For pensioners across Uttar Pradesh, the proposed revision could provide additional financial support for essential expenses and strengthen the role of social security pensions in household welfare.
