Breaking the Silence: How IAS Officer Manisha Awhale Is Tackling Breast Cancer in Rural India

In 2017, IAS officer Manisha Awhale faced the emotional challenge of her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis just days before her UPSC interview. Her mother’s recovery inspired her to champion breast cancer awareness, leading to the launch of Project Nidan in Solapur, Maharashtra, in 2022.

The project aims to address the lack of awareness and screening facilities in rural areas. Awhale focused on training ASHA workers and ANMs, leveraging their community trust to encourage women to undergo screenings. Despite initial resistance, door-to-door outreach efforts gradually broke the stigma surrounding breast cancer.

Within three months, Project Nidan screened over 700 women, diagnosing 31 cases and ensuring free treatment through partnerships with hospitals. Beyond numbers, the initiative transformed women’s attitudes toward their health, fostering early detection and hope. For Manisha, this mission is deeply personal, a testament to her belief in prioritizing women’s health without fear or stigma.
