Nestled within the emerald embrace of the Nallamala forests, in the heart of Andhra Pradesh’s Rayalaseema region, lies a unique haven for nature lovers – the Nallamala Jungle Camp. This community-based eco-tourism initiative, is not just a destination; it’s a symphony of conservation, sustainable living, and immersive experiences.

Its very existence stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication of IFS officer Vineet Kumar, DFO Nandyal, who envisioned a space where guests could immerse themselves in the raw beauty of nature without leaving a lasting footprint.

NO HARM TO MOTHER NATURE

Mr. Kumar emphasised that every element of nature, including the ageing trees, is revered and protected. The camp’s approach to construction exemplifies its dedication to minimal environmental impact. The cottages, temporary in nature, ensure that the land is available for reclamation after a certain period. No tree or bamboo, including the dry and dead ones, have been felled, preserving the vegetation and habitats of birds and other wildlife. The cottages are elevated on platforms with minimal ground contact, safeguarding the complex root networks of bamboo and trees.

Mr. Kumar further informed Indian Masterminds, “Minimal use of cement (only for pillar foundation) and concrete has been ensured. Pathways have been made with earth without any permanent work and aligned in such a way that all the trees/shurbs/natural stones are kept intact.”

The use of sustainable materials, such as bamboo, treated wood, and local mud, further underlines the commitment to environmental responsibility.

CAMP ACTIVITIES

The camp’s activities cater to a diverse range of interests, from the thrill of jungle safaris to the tranquillity of birdwatching and the adventure of kayaking. Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural wonders of the region, from the dense bamboo forests to the meandering stream that breathes life into the microclimate, fostering an environment where a rich diversity of birds and insects coexist.

The camp’s offerings go beyond mere accommodation, encompassing a range of facilities such as Eco Cottages, traditional Mud Cottages, The Giant Squirrel Cafe, Nallamala Souvenir Shop, an Amphitheater, Gauri Ganpati Garden, beautiful landscaping, a medicinal nursery, eco-workshops, a canteen, educational base camps, and a watchtower.

CLIMATIC CHALLENGES

Rayalaseema’s unique climatic challenges, with high temperatures in summer and minimal rainfall, have shaped the forest into a deciduous haven. Mr. Kumar further informed that the Nallamala hills, an offshoot of the Eastern Ghats, provide a conducive environment for varied vegetation, creating a lush green oasis amidst the dry surroundings. The camp’s location in a valley along a stream adds to the cool and moist microclimate, offering a refreshing contrast to the arid landscape.

USAGE OF SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL

Mr. Vineet Kumar also highlighted the conscious use of sustainable materials like bamboo, treated wood, and local mud in construction. Mud cottages, adorned with lime, mud, and turmeric plastering, boast of roofs made from grass and bamboo. Wooden cottages incorporate reusable iron frames, showcasing a commitment to minimising waste. Local stones pave the pathways, contributing to the camp’s eco-friendly footprint.

WIFE’S SUPPORT

The Nallamala Jungle Camp not only provides a haven for nature enthusiasts but also stands as a community-driven initiative. Mr. Kumar’s wife, Rupak, played a pivotal role.

“My wife Rupak has contributed a lot to the development and extension of the site, most importantly by giving it visibility by outreaching,” he shared. Her initiatives, including nature camps and birdwatching sessions, have not only attracted local communities but also opened avenues for sustainable tourism in the region.

FEEDBACK

The officer further shared that tourists have liked the place, especially the natural experience of living inside a forest. The privacy and the smooth blend with surrounding forest and trees are the key features visitors appreciate and which the team kept as the objective since the beginning. Open space and balcony, and a little elevated platform of wooden deck makes the cottage experience pleasant as several visitors mentioned. Also, they can sit there and enjoy the birds, trees, butterflies without disturbing them. This seamless connection with nature and an absence of mobile networks to ensure that visitors are fully with their surroundings make a memorable imprint on the visitors.

“We had few international visitors, too, recently. Wildlife sightings, local food and the service by community members make the experience more cherishable,” Mr. Kumar added in conclusion.
