The country woke up to a profound sense of loss on Thursday, October 10, 2024, as the hearse carrying Ratan Tata’s body, adorned with white flowers, made its way from his residence to the NCPA in South Mumbai. The chairman emeritus of the Tata Group, one of India’s most revered industrialists and philanthropists, passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 86. As tributes poured in from across the nation, many of India’s top bureaucrats shared heartfelt messages, honoring the man who not only shaped the Indian industry but also left an indelible mark on society through his compassion, humility, and vision.

A Visionary Leader and a Compassionate Soul

Ratan Tata’s influence extended far beyond the corporate world, and his business model was steeped in empathy and social good. Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, Ms. Radha Raturi, reflected on Tata’s unique approach to business, saying, “Ratan Tata gave a new dimension to business — his model of compassion for the disadvantaged ensured positive social impact in all areas of the nation’s progress. His leadership and vision will survive and continue through the Tata legacy. He lived a simple life, always working for the larger good. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Chairman of Prasar Bharati, Mr. Navneet Sehgal, recalled a personal encounter with Tata during an investment promotion tour in 2018. “Sh Ratan Tata was an institution in himself. Since childhood, we believed Tata means reliability, and the name Tata has been a part of every Indian’s life in one way or another. I had met him in 2018 during our investment promotion tour to Mumbai, and I found him to be the most humble, soft-spoken, and genuine gentleman, not showing anything about his status as the biggest industrialist, philanthropist, or start-up investor of the country,” Sehgal said, echoing the pride felt by many Indians when Tata successfully acquired Corus Steel and Jaguar. He added, “As Indians, we felt proud when he took over Corus Steel and Jaguar. My heartfelt condolences to him.”

A Legacy of Integrity, Vision, and Compassion

For many, Ratan Tata represented a culture of honesty, ethics, and humility that is becoming rare in today’s fast-paced world. Former Defence Secretary Mr Yogendra Narain said, Ratan Tata was an institution whose personality, forward looking thinking, the desire to make India great and to motivate our industrialists to contribute to the welfare of the common man, has left a permanent mark in our society. The House of Tata’s stood as a benchmark for integrity and initiative, clean corporate dealings and the promotion of Indian industry, both at home and abroad.

Former Coal Secretary to Government of India, Mr Anil Swarup, noted, “Ratan Tata was truly an icon and not just an industrialist. He inspired all those who met him and even those like me, who never got an occasion to meet. His sagacity and his vision will be missed. May his soul rest in peace.”

CEO of the Global Tiger Initiative Council, Mr. Keshav Varma, a former IAS officer of Gujarat Cadre, remembered Tata’s contributions to wildlife conservation. “Mr. Ratan Tata was on the Board of Governors of the Global Tiger Initiative Council, an alliance of 20 range countries (harboring tigers and snow leopards). Like the Tiger, he was a big-hearted gentleman. The country and the conservation community stand diminished. A celebrated champion of wildlife and conservation across the globe, we shall forever miss his gentle demeanor, humility, compassion, and his grace and human values.”

Former Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, Mr Rohit Nandan, highlighted Tata’s ethics-driven leadership. “In Ratan Tata’s demise, India has lost one of its most illustrious citizens. He represented a culture, which is now nearly extinct, of honesty, integrity, ethics, and humility. His stewardship of all the Tata institutions during the last three decades took the Company and Trust to dizzying heights.”

Memories That Will Last Forever

For many in the bureaucratic community, Ratan Tata was more than just a businessman; he was an inspiration. Former CEO of Niti Aayog Mr Amitabh Kant shared a heartfelt message on X, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Ratan Tata. End of an era. An iconic stalwart is gone. A statesman among business leaders, a towering personality. He leaves behind a phenomenal global footprint – not easy to match, not easy to fill the void. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Fortunate to have him release my first book: Branding India: An Incredible Story.”

IAS officer GL Meena also shared his grief on social media, writing, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Shri Ratan Tata Ji, a visionary leader who shaped India’s industrial future with compassion, integrity, and innovation. His legacy will forever inspire generations to come. Rest in peace.”

Rohan Chandra Thakur, an IAS officer, fondly remembered his time working with Tata and shared a personal anecdote from 2006. “Year 2006. My first job with @TataCompanies as a Tata Administrative Service Officer. Had the good fortune of sitting next to the legend during our interaction and standing beside him for this photo! May his soul RIP!”

“Ratan Tata was a true giant, not just among his contemporaries but for all time. With his demise, India has lost a precious gem,” said Former Chief Secretary, Telangana Mr SK Joshi. “Any award now would be meaningless to Shri Tata, as he deserves to be honored with the ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his ethical contributions to business and his innate simplicity in personal life. He was a strategic thinker, as was evident during his presentation as a key speaker in a lecture series jointly organized by the Department of Administrative Reforms of the Government of India and Andhra Pradesh Bhawan, New Delhi, in 1998.”

As India mourns the passing of a true titan, it’s clear that Ratan Tata’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. From the boardrooms to the forests, from the industrial sectors to philanthropic ventures, his life’s work has touched countless lives, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, vision, and integrity that will not be forgotten.
