As West Bengal prepares for a crucial electoral battle, a quiet but decisive change has taken place at the top of its police force. At a time when law and order become the backbone of democracy, a seasoned officer has been chosen to lead from the front.
Siddh Nath Gupta, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. His appointment comes ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, signaling trust in experience, calm leadership, and strategic thinking.
ROOTS IN A SMALL TOWN, DREAMS WITHOUT LIMITS
Gupta’s journey began far from the corridors of power. He hails from Bindki, a small town in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Growing up in a modest environment, he built his path step by step.
His early education took place in local schools. But his ambition pushed him further. He secured admission to Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, one of the country’s top institutions. There, he completed his BTech in 1988 and MTech in 1990.
His academic journey reflects discipline and clarity of purpose. It also laid the foundation for his analytical approach in policing.
FROM IRS TO IPS: A STORY OF DETERMINATION
Gupta’s entry into civil services was not a one-step journey. In 1991, he cleared the UPSC exam and joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). But he aimed higher.
He appeared again. In 1992, he cleared the exam once more and entered the Indian Police Service, securing the West Bengal cadre. This decision shaped the course of his life.
It was a clear sign of his determination. He chose a path that demanded action on the ground, not just administration from behind a desk.
LEARNING THE GROUND REALITIES
Like many officers, Gupta began his career in field postings. He served as Superintendent of Police (SP) and later as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in different districts of West Bengal.
These years were crucial. He dealt with crime, law and order challenges, and public grievances. He understood how policing works at the grassroots.
His approach remained balanced. He combined firmness with calm decision-making. Over time, he built a reputation as a dependable officer.
RISING THROUGH THE RANKS
With experience came responsibility. Gupta moved to senior roles such as Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Additional Director General of Police (ADG).
In these positions, he handled policy matters, training, and administrative reforms. His role was no longer limited to one district. He was shaping systems.
He also served as Commissioner of Police in Asansol-Durgapur, where he managed urban policing challenges. Later, as ADG & IGP of South Bengal, he oversaw multiple districts.
Each role added a new dimension to his leadership.
MASTERING INTELLIGENCE AND INVESTIGATION
One of Gupta’s key strengths lies in intelligence and investigation. As Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), he handled complex cases and led major investigations.
Later, he became Director General of the State Crime Records Bureau. Here, he focused on improving crime data systems. He worked towards digitisation and better record management.
His tenure as Director General of the Intelligence Branch further strengthened his profile. He was responsible for monitoring internal security, gathering intelligence, and advising the government on sensitive matters.
These roles required foresight. They demanded silent efficiency. Gupta delivered both.
A CALM AND STRATEGIC LEADER
Colleagues often describe Gupta as calm and composed. He is known for taking measured decisions, even in tense situations.
His working style focuses on discipline, transparency, and professionalism. Over the years, he has contributed to modernising police systems and strengthening intelligence networks.
His ability to handle both field operations and strategic roles sets him apart. It is this balance that defines his leadership.
HONOURS THAT REFLECT SERVICE
Gupta’s long career has been marked by recognition. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Police Medal for Gallantry (2005), Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2008), and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2016).
He was also awarded the Chief Minister’s Medal in 2021. These honours reflect his commitment and consistency.
They also underline the trust placed in him by the system.
A CRUCIAL ROLE AHEAD
Now, as the DGP of West Bengal, Gupta steps into one of the most challenging phases of policing. Elections in the state are often intense. Maintaining law and order becomes critical.
His experience in intelligence, crime control, and administration makes him well-suited for the role. His appointment reflects a clear intent—to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections.
From managing ground-level policing to handling high-level intelligence, Gupta has seen it all. Now, he carries the responsibility of leading the entire police force during a crucial time.
A JOURNEY THAT INSPIRES
From the narrow lanes of Bindki to the top post in West Bengal Police, Siddh Nath Gupta’s journey is a story of perseverance.
It is about aiming higher, learning constantly, and staying calm under pressure.
As West Bengal moves towards elections, all eyes will be on how he steers the force. But his journey already stands as a reminder—strong leadership is often quiet, steady, and deeply rooted in experience.
