Indian Masterminds Stories

On August 21st of last year, as news of the Bharat Bandh spread across the country, a video began circulating on social media that quickly went viral. The footage featured an IPS officer who soon became the talk of the town. Amid a riotous mob, the officer sprang into action with remarkable agility. Sprinting across the road, he effortlessly leaped over a divider like a cheetah, confronting the rioters head-on. The sight of him was enough to send the mob scattering. This officer was Sankalp Sharma, a 2012-batch IPS officer, who was serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, at the time. His swift, decisive actions and exceptional fitness quickly became a topic of widespread admiration.

Now, he’s in the news again, as he has been transferred to Lakhimpur Kheri, the largest district in Uttar Pradesh, to serve as the new SP. From a background in engineering to the Indian Police Service, his journey stands as a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and dedication. Indian Masterminds brings you the inspiring story of this remarkable officer.

UPSC JOURNEY

Sankalp Sharma’s UPSC journey was far from easy. He made three attempts before achieving success. His first attempt in 2009 ended in disappointment, but instead of being discouraged, he chose to view it as a valuable learning experience. Undeterred, he gave it another shot in 2010, only to face another setback. It was through careful self-reflection and a thorough review of his approach that he identified and addressed his weaknesses. In 2011, after refining his strategy, Sankalp finally cleared the exam with an All India rank of 211 and realized his dream of joining the Indian Police Service in 2012, following the successful completion of his training.

His story is a powerful reminder that setbacks are not failures but stepping stones on the path to success. Sankalp’s perseverance, self-reflection, and resilience serve as a source of inspiration for UPSC aspirants everywhere, showing that hard work and determination are the keys to overcoming challenges and achieving one’s goals.

BACKGROUND

Born on July 16, 1986, Sankalp Sharma hails from Jaipur, where his father, Chunnalal Sharma, worked as an engineer posted in Sikar. Growing up in an environment that valued education, Sankalp always had a clear ambition to join the civil services. After completing his primary education in Sikar, he moved to Jaipur, where he finished his schooling before pursuing a degree in Chemical Science at IIT Roorkee. Despite his engineering background, his passion for civil services remained unwavering.

After completing both his B.Tech and M.Tech from IIT Roorkee, Sankalp received an offer from a prestigious IT company. However, instead of pursuing a lucrative career in the corporate world, he chose to follow his true calling in public service. Returning to Jaipur, he shared his aspirations with his father, and with his family’s full support, he made the decision to prepare for the UPSC exams. Sankalp opted for Geography and Philosophy as his optional subjects, reflecting his desire to explore the world from diverse perspectives.

A COMMITMENT TO SERVE AND JUSTICE

Sankalp’s career has been characterized by quick decision-making, a strong sense of duty, and an unwavering commitment to justice. In his first posting in Meerut Cantt, he solved a complex murder case involving a young woman and her lover. Later, in 2021, he handled a sensitive case in Badaun where local police had delayed registering an FIR for rape and murder. Sankalp acted swiftly, suspending the negligent SHO, demonstrating his dedication to accountability and justice. His actions reflect his firm stance on protecting victims’ rights while maintaining the integrity of the police force.

Throughout his career, Sankalp has taken charge of districts like Noida, Azamgarh, and Basti, earning a reputation for his swift and effective action. His decision to immediately suspend the negligent SHO in the Badaun gangrape murder case further highlighted his commitment to justice.

LOVE AND SUPPORT

Sankalp’s personal life has been just as fulfilling as his professional journey. During his training, he met Shalini, also selected for the IPS. Shalini stood out as an exceptional officer, earning the title of the best all-rounder trainee during their program. As they worked in different states, their bond grew stronger, and they eventually married.

Their shared dedication to public service and the role of an IPS officer deepened their connection, offering mutual support as they navigated the challenges of their demanding careers. Sankalp often speaks of the vital role family support has played in his success, especially the encouragement he received from his parents and Shalini.

Sankalp’s journey, defined by perseverance, a deep commitment to justice, and the unwavering love and support of his family, is a testament to how one can carve their own path and make a meaningful impact on society.
