NEW DELHI: Alok Tiwari, a 1988-batch Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) officer and Additional Member (Bridge) in the Railway Board, has assumed additional charge as Managing Director of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL).
He took charge of the additional responsibility on October 1, 2026, while continuing with his existing responsibilities at the Railway Board.
With more than 36 years of experience in Indian Railways, Tiwari brings extensive exposure to railway infrastructure planning, construction, project execution, safety, freight operations and administration. During his career, he has been associated with different stages of the railway infrastructure project lifecycle and has directly constructed and commissioned more than 1,000 km of railway infrastructure.
Who Is Alok Tiwari?
Alok Tiwari is a senior IRSE officer who currently serves as Additional Member (Bridge) at the Railway Board, Ministry of Railways.
He was appointed to the Pay Level-16 position in February 2026, after serving as Principal Executive Director (Bridge) in the Railway Board.
His career has spanned major railway zones, divisions, construction projects and central organisations, giving him experience across both technical and administrative functions.
Tiwari holds an M.Tech in Structural Engineering from Kurukshetra University, where he studied from 1987 to 1989. During his university years, he was associated with activities including cricket, trekking and technical debates.

Additional Charge as DFCCIL Managing Director
As Managing Director of DFCCIL in additional charge, Tiwari takes responsibility at a significant stage in the development of India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor network.
DFCCIL is responsible for developing and operating dedicated freight railway corridors aimed at improving freight transportation capacity, reducing transit times and enhancing the efficiency of India’s railway logistics network.
Tiwari’s background in railway infrastructure, bridge engineering, construction, safety and freight operations is expected to bring together technical and operational perspectives in his new responsibility.
His immediate focus includes strengthening operational efficiency, asset reliability, technological innovation and infrastructure excellence.
More Than 1,000 Km of Railway Infrastructure
A major feature of Tiwari’s career has been his involvement in large-scale railway infrastructure projects.
Over more than three decades, he has been associated with the complete lifecycle of major projects, including planning, construction, commissioning and subsequent operational considerations.
He has directly constructed and commissioned more than 1,000 km of railway infrastructure and has also overseen the construction of major bridges and network expansion works.
His career achievements include construction and commissioning of nine major bridges, gauge-conversion projects and other railway capacity-enhancement initiatives.
Key Railway Assignments
Tiwari has held several important positions across Indian Railways.
As Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) at South East Central Railway, he handled major infrastructure, doubling and network expansion projects.
He also served as Principal Chief Safety Officer at South Western Railway, where he was responsible for critical aspects of railway safety and operational compliance.
As Divisional Railway Manager of Guntakal Division, he handled railway operations, freight loading and passenger-related administration.
His experience also includes a leadership role with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), where he served as Chief Project Manager and Group General Manager and was involved in major railway capacity-enhancement projects.

Experience Across Infrastructure and Freight Operations
Tiwari’s career has given him exposure to several interconnected areas of railway administration.
His work in construction and project execution has involved physical expansion of the railway network, while his assignments in safety and divisional administration have provided experience in operational management.
His association with freight operations is particularly relevant to his latest responsibility at DFCCIL, where the focus is on building and operating dedicated freight infrastructure and improving the movement of goods by rail.
Focus on Future Railway Capacity
Tiwari has also been associated with discussions around the long-term capacity expansion requirements of Indian Railways.
The broader railway vision includes substantial investment in network expansion and capacity enhancement, with an objective of increasing the railways’ share in freight transportation.
Against this backdrop, DFCCIL’s dedicated freight corridors are an important component of India’s efforts to strengthen freight infrastructure and improve logistics efficiency.

A Blend of Technical and Administrative Experience
Tiwari’s latest assignment brings together two strands of his career – technical expertise in railway engineering and infrastructure and administrative experience across railway zones, divisions and major project organisations.
With his continuing responsibility as Additional Member (Bridge) at the Railway Board and the additional charge of DFCCIL Managing Director, he will oversee responsibilities spanning railway infrastructure, freight operations, project execution and organisational administration.
His appointment comes at an important stage in the development of India’s dedicated freight corridor network, where operational efficiency, infrastructure reliability and technology-driven improvements remain key priorities.
