New Delhi: Senior Indian Police Service officer A.Y.V. Krishna (IPS: 1995: AM), has been promoted to the rank of Special Director in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), according to reports on the latest senior-level police appointment.
Krishna, a 1995-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, is currently serving as an Additional Director in the CBI on central deputation. He was inducted into the agency in May 2024 after serving as an Inspector General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The Ministry of Home Affairs’ IPS records identify him as a 1995-batch Assam-Meghalaya-cadre officer.
From CRPF IG to CBI Additional Director
Before joining the CBI, Krishna served as an IG in the CRPF. An MHA order dated June 28, 2023, approved his appointment as IG, CRPF on deputation for five years or until further orders.

In May 2024, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions appointed Krishna as Additional Director, CBI. The order provided for his tenure in the agency up to August 6, 2028.
His elevation to Special Director therefore represents a progression within the CBI during his ongoing central deputation.
1995-Batch Assam-Meghalaya Cadre Officer
Krishna belongs to the 1995 allotment year of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre and entered the service through regular recruitment. His holds B.Tech. and MDPM degrees and was born on May 12, 1970. He was inducted into the IPS on December 28, 1995.
He has several service recognitions, including the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2017) and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011).
Long Central-Deputation Career
Krishna has held senior assignments at the Centre in addition to his state-cadre service. His central deputation included his appointment as IG in the CRPF in 2023, followed by his induction as Additional Director in the CBI in 2024.
His promotion comes at a senior stage of his IPS career, with the officer now moving to the Special Director rank in the country’s premier central investigative agency.
