New Delhi: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is heading towards a significant leadership transition, with its Chairman and Managing Director and two functional Directors scheduled to retire by February 2027. The company’s Director (Human Resources) position is also currently vacant, adding to the changes at the senior management level.
The upcoming transition will affect key leadership positions covering overall management, engineering and research and development, power and human resources.
BHEL CMD K Sadashiv Murthy to Retire in February 2027
K Sadashiv Murthy, Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL, is scheduled to superannuate on February 28, 2027.
Murthy has been leading BHEL since November 1, 2023. With his retirement due in February next year, the company will see a change at its top executive position.
The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) had earlier invited applications for the post of CMD, with the vacancy scheduled to arise from March 1, 2027.

Director (Engineering, R&D) S M Ramanathan to Superannuate
S M Ramanathan, Director (Engineering, Research & Development), is scheduled to retire on January 31, 2027.
Ramanathan assumed charge as Director (Engineering, Research & Development) on April 30, 2025.
His scheduled superannuation will create another leadership vacancy in one of BHEL’s key technical and research-focused functions.
Tajinder Gupta to Retire as Director (Power)
Tajinder Gupta, Director (Power), is also scheduled to superannuate on February 28, 2027.
Gupta currently holds the additional charge of Director (Human Resources), making his scheduled retirement particularly significant for BHEL’s senior management structure.
His retirement will coincide with the scheduled superannuation of CMD K Sadashiv Murthy.
BHEL Director (HR) Post Vacant Since March 2026
The Director (Human Resources) position at BHEL has been vacant since March 2026.
The previous incumbent, Krishna Kumar Thakur, relinquished charge on March 19, 2026, after being appointed as Director (Personnel) at NMDC Limited.
Following Thakur’s departure, Tajinder Gupta has been holding the additional charge of the HR portfolio along with his responsibilities as Director (Power).
Multiple Senior-Level Changes Ahead
The scheduled retirements will result in changes across several critical leadership functions at BHEL.
The key upcoming leadership changes are:
- K Sadashiv Murthy – CMD; scheduled to retire on February 28, 2027
- S M Ramanathan – Director (Engineering, R&D); scheduled to retire on January 31, 2027
- Tajinder Gupta – Director (Power); scheduled to retire on February 28, 2027
- Director (Human Resources) – Post currently vacant since March 2026
With the CMD and two functional Directors scheduled to retire within a short period, BHEL is expected to undergo a significant leadership reshuffle by early 2027.
