New Delhi: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered into a strategic tie-up with Hystar AS, Norway, to enable phased indigenisation and local manufacturing of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser systems for green hydrogen projects in India.
The collaboration is aimed at strengthening BHEL’s capabilities across the green hydrogen value chain and supporting the growing demand for electrolyser technology as India advances its clean energy transition.
BHEL Signs Strategic Agreement with Hystar
The agreement was signed by Y. Srinivas Rao, Executive Director (Heavy Power Equipment Plant, Hyderabad), and Sutripto De, General Manager & Head (New & Renewable Energy Business), on behalf of BHEL.
Fredrik Mowill, CEO of Hystar, signed the agreement on behalf of Hystar AS, Norway.
The signing ceremony was attended by Arvinn Eikeland Gadgil, Chargé d’Affaires, Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi, along with senior BHEL officials, including:
- Bani Varma, Director (Industrial Systems & Products), BHEL
- S M Ramanathan, Director (Engineering, Research & Development), BHEL
- Other senior officials from BHEL and Hystar
The company disclosed the development through a stock exchange filing. BHEL said the broad commercial consideration of the agreement remains confidential and has not been disclosed.
Collaboration to Enable Local PEM Electrolyser Manufacturing
The strategic partnership is expected to facilitate the phased indigenisation and local manufacturing of PEM electrolyser systems in India.
PEM electrolysers use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen and are an important technology for producing green hydrogen when powered by renewable energy.
Through the collaboration, BHEL aims to develop domestic capabilities for PEM electrolyser systems and strengthen its ability to execute green hydrogen projects in India.
BHEL to Offer Both Alkaline and PEM Electrolyser Solutions
The agreement with Hystar builds on BHEL’s existing efforts to develop electrolyser capabilities.
Earlier in July 2026, BHEL entered into a strategic tie-up with thyssenkrupp nucera India Private Limited for alkaline electrolyser systems.
With the latest collaboration for PEM technology, BHEL will be positioned to offer both major electrolyser technology solutions:
- Alkaline electrolyser systems through its tie-up with thyssenkrupp nucera India.
- PEM electrolyser systems through its collaboration with Hystar AS, Norway.
This dual technology capability is expected to strengthen BHEL’s position among Indian companies participating in the emerging green hydrogen market.
Partnership to Strengthen Green Hydrogen Project Execution
The collaboration is also expected to enhance BHEL’s project execution capabilities for green hydrogen projects in India.
The company intends to use the partnership to strengthen its presence across the green hydrogen value chain while supporting the development of domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The tie-up is also aligned with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Government of India’s Make in India initiative.
Strategic Significance for BHEL
Green hydrogen has emerged as an important area in India’s clean energy transition, with electrolyser technology playing a key role in its production.
BHEL’s partnership with Hystar will allow the company to expand its clean energy technology portfolio and develop capabilities in PEM electrolyser systems.
Combined with its alkaline electrolyser partnership, the company is pursuing a broader technology strategy to participate in India’s developing green hydrogen ecosystem.
BHEL Shares Trade Lower
Following the announcement, BHEL shares were trading 1.58% lower at Rs 413.35 on the BSE.
The stock movement comes as the company continues to expand its focus beyond conventional power equipment into emerging clean energy technologies, including green hydrogen.
