Patna: Bihar has opened 211 new government degree colleges in a single day, marking a major expansion of higher education infrastructure across the state. The initiative, launched under the government led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, has increased the total number of constituent degree colleges in Bihar to 483.
The state government said the move is aimed at making undergraduate education more accessible to students in rural and underserved areas by bringing degree colleges to the block level.
Bihar Opens 211 Degree Colleges Across 211 Blocks
Bihar has a total of 534 blocks, of which 211 previously did not have a degree college. To address this gap, the state government decided to establish new government colleges in all these degree-college-free blocks.
The initiative has been undertaken under the fourth resolution of Saat Nischay-3, titled “Unnat Shiksha Ujjwal Bhavishya” (Advanced Education, Bright Future).
Following the direction of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, government degree colleges have now been opened simultaneously across all 211 blocks without degree colleges.
According to the Higher Education Department, Bihar has become the first state in the country to open 211 new government degree colleges on the same day.

Number of Constituent Colleges Rises to 483
The latest expansion marks a significant increase in Bihar’s higher education infrastructure.
After the separation of Jharkhand from Bihar, the state had 272 constituent colleges. Most of these institutions were located in district headquarters, creating accessibility challenges for students living in rural areas.
With the addition of 211 new colleges, the number of constituent degree colleges in Bihar has now increased to 483.
New Colleges to Bring Higher Education Closer to Rural Students
The government’s decision was driven by the need to reduce the distance students have to travel for undergraduate education.
Earlier, students from blocks without degree colleges often had to travel to district headquarters or other towns for higher education. This resulted in additional travel time and financial expenses.
Students who needed to live away from home also had to bear accommodation costs.
The challenges were particularly significant for female students, who often faced additional difficulties in travelling long distances or staying away from their families.
The new colleges are expected to address these concerns by providing undergraduate education closer to students’ homes.
Six Subjects to Be Offered Initially
The newly established colleges have started with academic programmes in six subjects.
The state government plans to expand the academic offerings in these institutions in the coming period.
Along with additional subjects, the government has also said that other necessary facilities will be developed in the newly established colleges so that students can access better educational infrastructure locally.
The broader objective is to ensure that students do not have to travel to other locations simply to pursue undergraduate studies.
100 Teachers to Receive Training at Oxford University
The Bihar government is also focusing on improving the quality of teaching in the newly established colleges.
As part of this effort, 100 teachers appointed to the new colleges will be sent for training at the University of Oxford in the UK.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary directed the Higher Education Department to select teachers for the training during an orientation programme organised in Patna for 2,452 newly appointed teachers.
Government Focuses on Accessible and Quality Higher Education
The opening of 211 colleges represents a major expansion of Bihar’s higher education network, particularly at the grassroots level.
The government’s approach combines expansion of physical infrastructure with efforts to improve teaching quality through specialised training.
The initiative is expected to:
