Bihar Completes 5,285 Panchayat Sports Grounds, Targets 8,050 Villages for Grassroots Sports Development

The state has approved 5,317 sports ground projects, with 5,285 already completed, to strengthen rural sports infrastructure and nurture future athletes across Bihar.

Patna: The Bihar government has significantly expanded sports infrastructure at the grassroots level, completing 5,285 sports grounds across gram panchayats to promote sports culture among children and youth.

The state has set a target of developing sports grounds in 8,050 gram panchayats. So far, 5,317 projects have been approved, of which 5,285 sports grounds have been completed, while construction of the remaining 32 grounds is in its final stage.

The initiative is aimed at creating better sports infrastructure in rural areas and providing young athletes with opportunities to train and excel at state, national and international levels.

Bihar Targets Sports Grounds in 8,050 Gram Panchayats

The Bihar government is undertaking one of its largest grassroots sports infrastructure initiatives by developing sports grounds across village panchayats.

The progress of the project includes:

  • Target: Sports grounds in 8,050 gram panchayats.
  • Projects approved: 5,317.
  • Sports grounds completed: 5,285.
  • Projects in the final stage: 32.

The initiative is expected to encourage greater participation in sports among rural youth while improving access to basic sports facilities.

East Champaran Leads in Sports Ground Development

Several districts have witnessed significant progress in the construction of sports grounds.

The districts with the highest number of completed sports grounds are:

  • East Champaran: 307
  • Muzaffarpur: 263
  • Madhubani: 257
  • Gaya: 218
  • Samastipur: 194
  • West Champaran: 176
  • Purnia: 173
  • Nawada: 169
  • Saran: 168
  • Rohtas: 166
  • Banka: 162
  • Darbhanga: 156
  • Siwan: 155
  • Bhojpur: 154
  • Katihar: 151
  • Nalanda: 150
  • Patna: 126

Meanwhile, 32 sports grounds are nearing completion across different districts, including:

  • Jamui: 10
  • Khagaria: 5
  • Madhubani: 4
  • Jehanabad: 3
  • Munger: 3
  • Kaimur: 2
  • Saran: 2
  • Bhagalpur: 1
  • Kishanganj: 1
  • East Champaran: 1

Sports Infrastructure Expands Across Bihar

Over the past few years, the Bihar government has accelerated the development of sports infrastructure across the state.

Major initiatives include:

  • Construction of sports grounds at the gram panchayat level.
  • Development of block-level stadiums.
  • Creation of modern sports complexes.
  • Expansion of sports facilities meeting international standards.
  • Development of the world-class sports complex at Rajgir.
  • Construction of an international cricket stadium.
  • Preparations for the State Games 2026.

These initiatives are aimed at creating a stronger sporting ecosystem and encouraging wider participation in competitive sports.

Village Sports Grounds to Nurture Future Champions

The government believes that strong sports infrastructure is essential for identifying and developing sporting talent from the grassroots.

The newly developed village sports grounds are expected to:

  • Provide regular practice facilities for children and youth.
  • Encourage greater participation in sports at the village level.
  • Identify and nurture emerging sporting talent.
  • Improve opportunities for athletes to compete at state and national levels.
  • Help produce future international-level sportspersons from Bihar.

By expanding sports infrastructure across rural areas, the state aims to build a strong foundation for long-term sports development and inspire more young people to pursue careers in athletics and other sporting disciplines.
