Patna: Bihar is stepping up efforts to reduce road accidents by identifying and improving accident-prone locations, commonly known as black spots, across state and national highways. According to the Transport Department, a total of 702 black spots have been identified in the state over the past three years, of which 676 have already been improved.

Work is currently underway at eight black spots, while improvement work at the remaining locations is expected to be completed by August 2026.

676 Black Spots Improved Across Bihar

The Bihar Transport Department has been prioritising the identification and rectification of locations where road accidents occur frequently.

According to the department:

  • 702 black spots have been identified on state and national highways over the past three years.
  • 676 black spots have already been improved.
  • Improvement work is currently underway at 8 locations.
  • Work at the remaining black spots is expected to be completed by August.

ITMS to Be Introduced at 500 Major Locations

Bihar is also preparing to introduce the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) at 500 major locations across the state.

Transport Department Secretary Raj Kumar said the technology-based system will enable continuous monitoring of traffic and help authorities take prompt action against violations.

The system is expected to help monitor and address issues such as:

  • Over-speeding
  • Lane violations
  • Other traffic rule violations
  • Unsafe driving practices

By improving traffic monitoring and enforcement, the ITMS is expected to contribute to preventing accidents and making highways safer for commuters.

What Is a Black Spot?

A black spot is a section of a road where a high number of road accidents and fatalities occur.

Such locations are generally identified based on accident data collected over the previous three to five years.

Common examples of black spots include:

  • Sharp or dangerous curves.
  • Poorly designed intersections.
  • Roads with inadequate lighting.
  • Pothole-affected stretches.
  • Locations where accidents occur repeatedly.

Identifying these locations allows authorities to prioritise safety improvements and take corrective measures.

Measures Being Taken to Improve Black Spots

Authorities are implementing a range of engineering and safety measures to improve black and grey spots and reduce accident risks.

These measures include:

  • Installation of road safety signs.
  • Widening of roads where required.
  • Construction of underpasses and overpasses.
  • Road repair and maintenance.
  • Installation of anti-skid road surfaces.
  • Closing unauthorised road cuts.
  • Installation of barricades.
  • Road safety and public awareness campaigns.

The measures are designed to address specific risks at accident-prone locations and improve overall road conditions.

Public Urged to Follow Traffic Rules

The Transport Department has also appealed to citizens to follow traffic rules and adopt safe driving practices.

The government believes that infrastructure improvements, technology-based traffic monitoring and responsible road behaviour can collectively help reduce accidents and protect human lives.

The planned expansion of ITMS, along with the ongoing improvement of black spots, is expected to strengthen road safety and ensure smoother and safer traffic movement on Bihar’s highways and major roads.
