Patna: Bihar is preparing a major investment push in the energy sector, with proposed projects worth around ₹1,88,383 crore across power generation, energy storage, transmission, distribution and renewable energy.
The plans come as the state’s peak electricity demand is projected to reach 11,747 MW by 2030, compared with around 9,475 MW currently. Energy Secretary and BSPHCL CMD Ajay Yadav shared the details at an India Energy Week (IEW) 2027 awareness programme at IIT Patna.
Bihar’s Power Demand Continues to Rise
Bihar now has around 2.32 crore electricity consumers. The state’s maximum power demand has risen from about 2,831 MW in 2014 to around 9,475 MW, creating the need for large-scale expansion of its energy infrastructure.
The state is targeting 24 GW of renewable energy capacity and 6.1 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2029-30. Its Renewable Energy Policy-2025 also provides incentives to attract investment and promote clean-energy projects.

₹1.32 Lakh Crore for Generation and Storage
Around ₹1,32,521 crore of the proposed investment is earmarked for power generation and energy storage projects.
A major component is the planned development of around 8,400 MW of pumped storage capacity across Nawada, Jamui, Banka and Munger under Bihar’s Pumped Storage Project Policy-2025.
Other major projects include:
- A 1,100 MW rooftop solar programme for around 10 lakh Kutir Jyoti consumers under PM Surya Ghar Yojana.
- 500 MW grid-connected rooftop solar capacity on government buildings.
- A 150 MW Aurangabad solar park with battery storage.
- A proposed 4×700 MW nuclear power project in Banka.
₹1,040 Crore Push for Green Hydrogen
Bihar is also preparing to build a green hydrogen ecosystem following Cabinet approval of its Green Hydrogen Policy.
The initiative carries a provision of around ₹1,040 crore and will initially focus on developing five Green Hydrogen Villages on a pilot basis.
The villages will explore the use of green hydrogen for clean cooking and electricity generation. Each selected village will receive an incentive of ₹1 crore, creating a local demonstration model for clean-energy adoption.
Transmission and Distribution Get Major Investments
The state also plans substantial spending to strengthen the electricity network.
Around ₹24,683 crore is proposed for the transmission sector, which will support the development of 56 new substations and nearly 7,400 circuit kilometres of transmission lines.
Another ₹28,809 crore is proposed for expansion and modernisation of the distribution network. In addition, around ₹2,370 crore is planned for maintenance and digital infrastructure.
These investments are expected to improve the capacity and reliability of Bihar’s electricity network as demand continues to grow.
Smart and Cleaner Energy Future
Beyond physical infrastructure, Bihar is also focusing on smart metering, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, rooftop solar and clean energy. The broader approach aims to make the state’s power system more efficient, secure and capable of handling rising consumption.
The proposed investments also position renewable energy and storage as important parts of Bihar’s future power mix, while pumped storage can provide greater flexibility for integrating renewable power into the grid.
IEW 2027 to Showcase Bihar’s Energy Potential
The India Energy Week 2027 platform is being used to present Bihar’s energy-sector achievements, investment opportunities and future projects to national and international stakeholders.
With growing electricity demand and large planned investments in generation, storage, transmission, distribution and renewable energy, Bihar is seeking to build a stronger and more secure energy system. The proposed projects could also create new opportunities for clean-energy investment, technology adoption and regional development across the state.
