Patna: Government technical institutions in Bihar have recorded a sharp rise in student enrolment, with 94.39% of engineering seats and 98.08% of polytechnic seats filled in the 2026-27 academic session.
Across 38 government engineering colleges, 14,331 of 15,183 BTech seats were filled. In 46 government polytechnic institutions, 16,897 of 17,227 diploma seats were taken. The figures represent a significant increase compared with five years ago.
Engineering enrolment rose from 65.86% in 2022-23 to 94.39% in 2026-27, while polytechnic enrolment increased from 84.37% to 98.08% over the same period.
New-Age Courses and Better Facilities
The state has also been expanding the range of technical education beyond traditional engineering streams.
Courses and academic focus areas now include Artificial Intelligence, cyber security, biomedical engineering, robotics and data science. At the polytechnic level, programmes such as fire technology and safety, mining, food processing, CAD/CAM and printing technology have also been introduced.
Government institutions are also being equipped with smart classrooms, modern laboratories and workshops, language labs, hostels, sports facilities and employment-oriented training.
The department has also highlighted NBA accreditation for 20 programmes across 11 government polytechnic institutions.

Placements Rise Nearly 12-Fold
The biggest change has been recorded in student placements.
In 2020-21, a total of 1,700 students from government engineering and polytechnic institutions secured placements. This included 698 engineering and 1,002 polytechnic students.
The number rose to 4,681 in 2021-22, 4,944 in 2022-23, 8,197 in 2023-24 and 11,178 in 2024-25.
In 2025-26, placements reached 20,477 students, including 14,645 polytechnic and 5,832 engineering students. As many as 4,843 female students were also placed during the year.
IIT Patna Partnership for Practical Training
Bihar is also working with IIT Patna to strengthen practical technical training in government polytechnic institutions.
According to the state information, Centres of Excellence are being developed through the partnership, with training focused on emerging technologies such as electric vehicles, drone technology, 3D printing and robotics.
The state is also using faculty development programmes, training of trainers, spoken tutorials and industry-oriented courses to strengthen students’ practical and employment-related skills.
Low Fees Remain a Major Factor
Government technical institutions continue to offer courses at relatively low tuition costs. The information provided by the department states that monthly tuition fees are ₹10 in government engineering colleges and ₹5 in government polytechnic institutions.
The Bihar Student Credit Card scheme is also intended to support students pursuing higher education. In BTech courses, 33% reservation is provided for female students.
With enrolment rising alongside placement numbers and newer technical courses, Bihar’s government institutions are increasingly focusing on connecting technical education with practical skills and employment.
