Patna: Bihar’s Munger-Mirza Chowki Greenfield Four-Lane Project (Package-1) is nearing completion, with 87.14% of the 22.56-km stretch already constructed. Vehicles are expected to start running on the entire route from November 15, 2026.
Built at a cost of around ₹845.27 crore, the road connects Janki Nagar in Munger with Kharia village and is expected to provide faster connectivity towards Bhagalpur, Banka and Jharkhand.
87% Construction Work Completed
According to Road Construction Department Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pal, more than 21 km of the four-lane road has been completed.
The remaining work includes approach roads to the railway overbridge, underpass connectivity and concrete work on a few stretches. The department expects these works to be completed within the scheduled timeline.
Once operational, the road will provide relief from narrow existing routes and traffic congestion in the region.

Project Faced Flooding and Land Challenges
Construction faced difficulties because the area near the Ganga remains vulnerable to flooding and waterlogging for three to four months every year. This affected the availability of soil required for road embankments.
Land acquisition disputes over compensation also delayed construction on around 9.5 km of the project.
An administrative decision taken on September 22, 2023, helped resolve the land acquisition issues, following which the district administration completed the acquisition in phases.
To overcome the shortage of soil, the department arranged pond ash from NTPC for embankment construction.
Faster Route to Bhagalpur and Jharkhand
The new greenfield road is expected to significantly improve connectivity from Munger towards Bhagalpur, Banka and the Jharkhand border.
It will also strengthen the road connection between Bihar and the Jharkhand side around Mirza Chowki and Sahibganj, supporting inter-state passenger and goods movement.
Better connectivity is expected to reduce travel time and make transportation of agricultural products, minerals and industrial goods easier and more cost-effective.
Easier Access to Healthcare and Education
The project is also expected to benefit residents of Munger, Lakhisarai and nearby rural areas by improving access to major hospitals, medical colleges and educational institutions in Bhagalpur.
The department said the road has been developed using modern construction techniques and safety standards, including underpass facilities, to provide safer and more comfortable travel.
With most of the construction complete, the project is now entering its final phase. If the remaining works finish as scheduled, the new four-lane corridor will open to traffic on November 15, strengthening Bihar’s road network and its connectivity with Jharkhand.
