Patna: Bihar is set to expand hockey across all districts and blocks as the state looks to strengthen the sport at the grassroots level and create more opportunities for young talent from rural and remote areas.
Rural Development and Information & Public Relations Minister and Hockey Association of Bihar President Shravan Kumar said the association will work with the state government to organise and develop hockey across Bihar. He was speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Hockey Association of Bihar at S.R. Garden in Patna on Sunday.
The move could widen the talent pool for hockey in the state by bringing more players from areas that currently have limited access to organised sporting facilities and competitions.
Focus on Taking Hockey to the Grassroots
Shravan Kumar said the Hockey Association of Bihar has set a clear goal of taking the sport to the grassroots.
Expanding hockey beyond major cities and established sporting centres will help identify talented players at the district and block levels. It will also give young athletes from villages and remote areas a platform to develop their skills and compete at higher levels.
The minister said the sport would be organised systematically across the state so that players can get the support and opportunities required to pursue hockey seriously.
For Bihar, where sporting talent often emerges from areas with limited infrastructure, a wider grassroots network could help bridge the gap between local talent and competitive platforms.

Resources Should Not Hold Back Talent
A major focus of the meeting was the availability of resources for young players.
During the programme, Shravan Kumar encouraged hockey players from Dalit Shoshit Samadhan Vidyalaya by presenting them with graphite hockey sticks. He wished the players success and a bright future in the sport.
He said a shortage of resources should not prevent talented players from developing their abilities. The Hockey Association of Bihar and the state government will work together to provide the necessary support and facilities, he said.
Access to basic sporting equipment can make a significant difference for young athletes, particularly those coming from economically weaker backgrounds or areas where specialised hockey equipment is difficult to obtain.
Bihar Wants a Stronger Hockey Ecosystem
The minister said the coming period could offer a promising future for hockey players in Bihar.
The state government, he said, remains committed to the development of sports and athletes. The Hockey Association of Bihar will work alongside the government to expand hockey-related activities and strengthen the sport across the state.
The broader objective is to build Bihar’s presence in hockey and make the state one of the leading hockey states in the country.
For this to happen, developing players at the grassroots level will be important. A stronger district and block-level structure can help create a continuous pathway for players — from early identification and training to participation in higher-level competitions.
Annual General Meeting Reviews 2025-26
The Annual General Meeting also reviewed the association’s work during 2025-26.
Members discussed the proposed activities and programmes for the next financial year and approved a detailed action plan for 2026-27. The meeting also approved the prescribed agenda, including matters related to NSF, through consensus.
To improve the functioning of the association and ensure better implementation of its activities, several committees were formed and chairpersons were appointed.
The decisions are expected to provide a more structured framework for carrying out the association’s programmes during the coming year.
District Units to Play a Key Role
Representatives from different district units participated in discussions on the association’s upcoming plans and programmes.
The discussions focused on expanding activities and strengthening hockey at the district and grassroots levels. With hockey planned across all districts and blocks, district-level units are likely to have an important role in identifying players and supporting the expansion of the sport.
The secretary of the Hockey Association of Bihar, Rana Pratap Singh, presented the minutes of the previous proceedings. The treasurer presented the association’s accounts and annual financial statement before the members.
The participation of district representatives also provided an opportunity to discuss local requirements and future programmes with the association’s leadership.
Building a Pathway for Rural Talent
The proposed expansion of hockey is significant because sporting talent in Bihar is not limited to urban centres. Young players in rural areas often need better access to equipment, coaching, competitions and organised sporting structures to progress.
By taking hockey to the block and district levels, the association aims to create more entry points for aspiring players. If supported with regular competitions, training and adequate resources, the initiative could help identify promising athletes much earlier.
The focus on grassroots development also fits into the wider push to make sports more accessible beyond established sporting centres.
