Patna: Bihar is strengthening its indoor sports infrastructure with a new High-Tech Indoor Stadium-II at Patliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh. The ₹21.20 crore facility is expected to be ready by March 2027.

Spread across around 30,864 sq ft, the stadium will have a nearly 25,000 sq ft sports floor and facilities for several indoor disciplines, giving athletes access to modern training and competition infrastructure within the state.

Support for Multiple Indoor Sports

The new stadium will provide facilities for kabaddi, basketball, boxing, volleyball, sepak takraw, wrestling, gymnastics, yoga and fitness activities.

The large sports floor will allow courts and training areas to be arranged according to the requirements of different sporting disciplines. This is expected to give athletes a common platform for regular practice, training camps and competitions.

Preparing Athletes for Major Events

The Sports Department plans to use the facility not only for competitions but also for long-term athlete development.

The infrastructure will support preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the proposed 2030 Commonwealth Games. Better facilities within Bihar could also reduce athletes’ dependence on other states for advanced indoor training.

More Than 1,000 Spectator Seats

The stadium will have a retractable seating system for more than 1,000 spectators. The seating can be opened or folded depending on the event, allowing organisers to make better use of the sports floor.

This will also enable the complex to host larger state, national and potentially international-level sporting events.

Residential Facilities for Athletes

The project will include separate 40-bed dormitories for male and female athletes.

The accommodation will be useful during training camps and state- and national-level competitions, allowing athletes to stay close to their training and competition facilities.

The complex will also have warm-up areas, modern changing rooms, lockers and separate washrooms for male and female athletes.

Broadcasting and Accessibility Facilities

A dedicated broadcasting room will support the live coverage of major competitions. The facility is being designed to meet the technology requirements of modern sporting events.

Safety and accessibility will also form part of the stadium’s design. Multiple emergency exits, wide corridors and universal-access ramps will help make the facility safer and more accessible for athletes, spectators and persons with disabilities.

Green Technology in Stadium Construction

The project will incorporate environment-friendly construction methods, including a prefabricated steel structure and PPG insulated panels.

A sustainable HVAC air-conditioning system based on green building standards will also be installed to improve energy efficiency.

A New Indoor Sports Hub for Bihar

The high-tech indoor stadium is expected to strengthen Patliputra Sports Complex as a major indoor sports centre in Bihar.

By bringing training, competitions and athlete accommodation together in one facility, the project could create better opportunities for emerging talent from both urban and rural areas.

Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh said providing world-class facilities and a better training environment to athletes is among the state government’s top priorities. She said the new stadium is an important step towards helping Bihar’s sporting talent establish itself at national and international levels.

The project therefore goes beyond creating another sports venue. With modern infrastructure and a focus on scientific training, Bihar aims to give its athletes a stronger platform to compete at higher levels and pursue national and international medals.
