New Delhi: Coal loading to India’s power sector has recorded a consistent upward trend, increasing from 370 rakes on September 3, 2026, to 444 rakes on September 6. The four-day rise of 74 rakes reflects sustained efforts by coal producers and the government to strengthen coal availability for thermal power generation.

The sharpest single-day improvement during the period was recorded on September 6, when loading increased by 31 rakes compared with the previous day.

Coal Rake Loading Shows Strong Improvement

The Ministry of Coal said the improvement has been driven by coordinated efforts by Coal India Limited (CIL), its subsidiaries, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and captive mine operators to increase coal supplies to the power sector.

Nearly all major coal-producing companies recorded higher rake loading on September 6, contributing to the overall improvement in coal dispatches.

The four-day trend was as follows:

  • September 3: 370 rakes
  • September 6: 444 rakes
  • Net increase: 74 rakes
  • Single-day increase on September 6: 31 rakes

MCL Records Highest Single-Day Increase

Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) recorded the largest single-day increase on September 6, adding 12 rakes to reach 111 rakes per day.

Other key increases included:

  • Captive blocks: Up by 6 rakes to 72 rakes per day
  • Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL): Up by 8 rakes to 25 rakes
  • Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL): Up by 3 rakes to 35 rakes
  • Private washeries and goods sheds: Up by 3 rakes to 42 rakes
  • Central Coalfields Limited (CCL): Up by 2 rakes to 36 rakes
  • South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL): Up by 1 rake to 46 rakes

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) maintained their previous loading levels at 23 and 29 rakes, respectively.

CIL Siding Loading Reaches 305 Rakes

The improvement was also reflected in the overall loading from Coal India Limited sidings.

CIL siding loading reached 305 rakes per day on September 6, marking an increase of 26 rakes over the previous day.

The rise indicates improving coal evacuation and dispatch momentum as coal companies continue to focus on meeting the requirements of thermal power plants.

Critical Thermal Power Plants Under Close Watch

The Ministry of Coal said thermal power stations with coal stocks below 25% of their normative requirement continue to remain under close monitoring.

Corrective supply measures are already being implemented at these critical plants to improve coal availability and address low-stock situations.

The Ministry of Coal and Coal India Limited have reiterated their focus on sustaining the recent improvement in rake loading and ensuring adequate coal supplies to the power sector.

Government Focuses on Sustaining Coal Supply Momentum

The steady increase in coal rake loading highlights the coordinated operational efforts of public sector coal companies, SCCL and captive mine operators.

The rise from 370 to 444 rakes per day in four days points to stronger coal movement towards power stations and continued efforts to support thermal power generation and prevent supply disruptions.
