Patna: Bihar is preparing to give its tourism sector a major water-based push by developing 276 lakes, ponds, dams and rivers as tourist destinations. The Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department has prepared a master plan to expand water tourism across the state.

More than 70 water bodies will be developed in the first phase, with facilities planned for boating, water sports, river safaris, bird watching and floating restaurants.

From Ganga to Ghora Katora

The proposed water tourism network will cover several prominent destinations, including the Ganga in Patna, Kanwar Lake in Begusarai, Falgu River in Gaya, Ghora Katora in Nalanda and Kakolat in Nawada.

Boating and water-based activities are also planned along the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Son and Punpun rivers. Floating jetties will be developed at selected locations to support speedboat and cruise services.

The plan also aims to attract nature lovers through activities such as bird watching and river safaris.

Shikaras, Houseboats and Jet Skis

The government plans to offer different boating experiences to suit families, adventure seekers and other visitors.

Proposed options include speed boats, jet skis, shikaras, houseboats, paddle boats, motorboats, kayaks, canoes, rafts and rowing boats.

While families could enjoy paddle boats and motorboats, adventure-oriented visitors may have options such as speedboats and jet skis.

Water Tourism to Create Jobs

The tourism push is also expected to create employment opportunities for local communities. According to the department, the initiative could generate more than 10,000 jobs.

The opportunities could extend beyond boating services to lifeguards, tour guides, security personnel, hotels, resorts, restaurants and local transport providers.

Small businesses around the water bodies, including food vendors and handicraft sellers, could also benefit from increased tourist footfall.

Bihar Eyes Nature and Adventure Tourism

Bihar has traditionally attracted visitors for its religious and historical destinations. The expansion of water tourism could help the state diversify its tourism offerings and strengthen its presence in nature and adventure tourism.

A dedicated water tourism map is also planned to help visitors discover water-based attractions across the state.

Target of 12 Lakh Tourists a Month

The department has set an ambitious target of attracting around 12 lakh tourists every month through the broader water tourism initiative.

Ponds and dams are proposed to be developed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, potentially bringing private investment and expertise into tourism infrastructure.

The initiative could give Bihar’s water bodies a new economic and recreational role while creating additional opportunities for local communities.
