Udaipur: Heads and senior representatives of competition authorities from BRICS member countries have reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation, dialogue and knowledge-sharing to strengthen competition enforcement in increasingly interconnected markets.

The commitment came at the Meeting of Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities, organised by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in Udaipur, Rajasthan, under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026.

A major outcome of the meeting was the adoption of a Joint Statement titled “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in Renewable Energy Markets.” The statement highlights the shared commitment of BRICS competition authorities to fostering competitive, innovative, resilient and sustainable markets, particularly as countries navigate the global transition towards renewable energy.

Ravneet Kaur Highlights Need for Stronger Competition Cooperation

In her inaugural address, Smt. Ravneet Kaur, Chairperson, Competition Commission of India, emphasised the shared responsibility of BRICS competition authorities to preserve and promote competitive markets.

She said effective competition is essential for improving efficiency, protecting consumer welfare, encouraging innovation and creating opportunities for businesses to compete on merit.

Ravneet Kaur also highlighted the increasingly cross-border nature of digital markets and emerging technologies. With businesses and markets becoming more interconnected, she stressed that sustained cooperation and knowledge-sharing among BRICS competition authorities would be crucial to developing informed, effective and future-ready approaches to competition enforcement.

Focus on Renewable Energy and Sustainable Growth

Renewable energy emerged as a key area of discussion during the meeting.

Highlighting the global transition towards renewable energy and sustainability, the CCI Chairperson noted that continued collaboration among BRICS competition authorities could help foster fair and competitive renewable energy markets while supporting the broader objectives of sustainable growth and energy security.

She further emphasised that competition law interventions must remain principled and evidence-based amid rapidly changing market dynamics and emerging enforcement challenges.

According to her, competition authorities must ensure that their interventions remain firmly anchored in the core objectives of competition law.

BRICS Authorities Exchange Views on Competition Law

During the meeting, the Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities exchanged views on recent developments in competition law and policy across their respective jurisdictions.

The discussions covered significant enforcement initiatives, institutional developments and emerging competition challenges in domestic markets.

The exchange provided an opportunity for participating authorities to share experiences and approaches while examining how competition policy can respond to rapidly evolving markets, new technologies and changing economic conditions.

CCI Presents Study on Renewable Energy Competition Landscape

As part of India’s BRICS Chairship, the CCI also steered a collaborative BRICS study titled “Emerging Competition Landscape in the Renewable Energy Sector in BRICS.”

The study was undertaken to develop a better understanding of the evolving competition dynamics in renewable energy markets across BRICS jurisdictions.

It also sought to identify potential areas for future cooperation among competition authorities.

The key findings of the study were presented during the Udaipur meeting, giving participating authorities an opportunity to examine common competition issues emerging from the expansion of renewable energy markets.

Joint Statement Adopted by BRICS Competition Authorities

The adoption of the Joint Statement was one of the key outcomes of the meeting.

Titled “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in Renewable Energy Markets,” the statement reflects the collective commitment of BRICS competition authorities to strengthening cooperation in competition enforcement.

The authorities agreed on the importance of enhanced knowledge-sharing and continued dialogue as countries address competition issues arising from the global energy transition.

The statement also underlines the importance of promoting competitive, innovative, resilient and sustainable renewable energy markets.

The initiative assumes significance as BRICS economies continue to expand their renewable energy sectors while balancing the requirements of energy security, investment, innovation and sustainable development.

Brazil Briefs Members on 2027 BRICS Competition Conference

During the meeting, Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) briefed participating authorities about preparations for the Xth BRICS International Competition Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2027.

The conference is expected to provide another platform for competition authorities from BRICS countries to exchange experiences, discuss emerging enforcement challenges and deepen institutional cooperation.

Commitment to Continued Cooperation

The Udaipur meeting concluded with closing remarks by the Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities.

The participating authorities reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation, dialogue and knowledge-sharing to strengthen effective competition enforcement.

The discussions also recognised the need for competition authorities to remain responsive to emerging challenges in increasingly interconnected markets.

With digital technologies, cross-border commerce and renewable energy reshaping global markets, the BRICS competition authorities indicated that stronger institutional cooperation would remain important for ensuring competitive and sustainable economic ecosystems.
