Patiala: Patiala Police, under the guidance of DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav (IPS: 1992: Punjab), DIG Patiala Range Kuldeep Singh Chahal (IPS: 2009: Punjab), and SSP Patiala Harmandeep Singh Hans (IPS: 2015: Punjab), has taken steps to maintain law and order near Rajpura after unverified claims circulated through student social media groups.
The police said senior officers, including SP Rajpura, DSP Banur and SHO Banur, are maintaining contact with the university management and monitoring the situation. The move comes after a late-night student protest on September 25 following social media claims about missing students and alleged deaths at the university hostel.
Patiala Police said the information circulating online is being verified and urged students and the public not to forward unverified messages, videos or social media posts.
What Happened at Chitkara University?
The unrest began after posts circulated among students alleging that two female students were missing and that deaths had occurred at a hostel. Students also raised questions about screams reportedly heard near the girls’ hostel and an ambulance seen on campus. However, these details did not establish that any student had died or disappeared.

Chitkara University denied the claims, stating that no suicide or death had taken place at the girls’ hostel. Patiala SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans also said no student death or suicide had been reported by students, their families or university authorities.
Banur DSP Sukhdev Singh said police received a complaint from students regarding the missing-student claims but that protesters could not provide names or identifying details of the alleged missing students. Police said the claims would be verified.
The protest later escalated, with reports of damage to university property and police vehicles. Police are examining CCTV footage as part of the investigation into the events and the damage caused during the unrest.
Police Appeal
Patiala Police has appealed to students and the public to rely on verified information from the police, university and other authorised sources instead of forwarding unverified content.
